More estate inventory indexes!

An important source for the Swedish genealogist is the estate inventory. Here you can prove genealogical relationships and find information about the deceased’s heirs. You will also see the assets and debts of the deceased which will help you gain a better understanding of your ancestor or relative’s life.

Our estate inventories index makes it much simpler for you to find the correct estate inventory, something that can be time-consuming since the estate inventories are not organized in any exact order. About three years ago, we launched our searchable estate inventory index and we have added additional material several times.

Now it is time for a new update. This time we have added new searchable posts for estate inventories from Gävleborg, Jämtland, Norrbotten, Uppsala, Västerbotten and Västernorrland counties. For some of these counties, there were already searchable posts available but we have added more searchable material.

petrus sodergren

With this update, we have added 258,982 new searchable index posts. After this update, the estate inventories index includes a total of 1,864,795 posts.

Click here in order to open a PDF file to see what this update includes. In the list, you will see the county and district or city archive that is included in the update. You can even see what years the searchable index covers, both the total and what is included in this update.

In the estate inventories index, you can search by name, the year when the estate inventory was created together with county and parish where the person lived. When you search by year, it is important to remember that the estate inventory was not always created the same year the person died. Therefore, it is often a good idea to search for a time period from the year of death and a couple of years forward.

The estate inventories index now includes searchable name posts from the following counties: Gotland, Gävleborg, Göteborg och Bohus, Jämtland, Jönköping, Kalmar, Kronoberg, Norrbotten, Skaraborg, Stockholm, Södermanland, Uppsala, Värmland, Västerbotten, Västernorrland, Västmanland, Älvsborg and Östergötland. We will continue to add more indexes, so watch our blog or other social media for news about the updates.

Estate Inventory index for Södermanland and Västmanland

It has been approximately three years since we launched our name searchable estate inventory index which has been updated several times.

Now it is time for a new update. This time we have added searchable posts for estate inventories for Södermanland and Västmanland district and city courts.

The estate inventories are an important source for the researcher. Here, you can prove genealogical relationships and get information about the deceased’s heirs. You also get a detailed list of the deceased’s assets and debts enabling you to get a better understanding of your ancestor’s life.

Our index makes it much easier for you to find the correct estate inventory, since in normal cases it can be time consuming to search since the estate inventories are not arranged in any exact order.

In the estate inventory register, you can search by name, the year the estate inventory was performed along with the county and parish where the deceased lived. When you search by year, it is good to remember that the estate inventory was not always performed the same year the person died. Therefore, search for a time interval beginning with the year the person died and a few years in the future.

Today’s update includes searchable posts from the following archives:

Estate Inventory Register available for Skaraborg county

The estate inventories (bouppteckningar) are one of the most important records for genealogists. These records can prove genealogical relationships as well as listing the names of the deceased’s heirs. Also, the estate inventory lists all the assets and debts of the deceased enabling one to get a better understanding of one’s ancestor’s life.

It can take some time to find the correct estate inventory since they are not organized in an exact order. To make it easier to find the correct one, ArkivDigital is working on creating name searchable indexes for the estate inventories.

We have now updated the inventory of estate index with about 200,000 entries for Skaraborg county. If you have ancestors who died in Skaraborg, it is now much easier to find their estate inventory.

Estate Inventory Status Update – February 2019

Next to the church books, the estate inventory records are probably the most important source material for many genealogists. These rich records provide genealogical information as well as detailing the assets and debts of the deceased which helps one gain a deeper understanding of one’s ancestor’s life.

We have photographed all the estate inventory records from earliest times up to 1940 for all of Sweden.  Our goal is to photograph all up until 1960. For some counties, the photographing is complete while work remains for other counties. Below is the photographing status for each county. There may be cases in all counties where individual volumes may be missing for example where the volume could not be photographed because of its extremely poor physical condition.

Search by name in the Swedish historical records!

One common question that one hears from Swedish-Americans new to Swedish records, “Are the records searchable by name?” Today, we can say that increasingly more and more Swedish records such as the church books, estate inventories and other record types are searchable by name.  One of ArkivDigital’s primary goals is to make Swedish research easier and one method is name searchable indexes.

New search index for Agricultural Statistics 1944

In the church books and other Swedish historical records, we discover many ancestors and relatives who owned or worked on farms. One title one often sees is hemmansägare (home owner or owner of the farm). But what was the practical life like for a person with this title?

When we are talking about rural life in the middle of the 20th century, a useful source, Swedish National Agricultural Census of 1944, has been available in the All-in-one version of ArkivDigital for over a year. It has been somewhat difficult to search in the census but now a name searchable index also in the All-in-one version has been created to ease the search. You can search by the farmer’s name, place name and parish. To search, you do the following:

  • Select New index search.
  • Under index source, select Agriculture statistics 1944.
  • Enter the search criteria and click search.

Here is an example. In the Population of Sweden 1950, you will find a Per Georg Eliasson born in 1882 shown as a hemmansägare at Stenviksstrand 1:10 in Ramsele parish in Västernorrland county. See image below.

1950 per georg

1944 agricultural census searchSearch index record – Agriculture statistics 1944 for Per Georg Eliasson

By looking at the Swedish National Agriculture Census of 1944, one can get a better understanding of his life. His farm consisted of 139 hectares or about 343 acres. You will see that the division of the farm included 7 hectares of tilled land or fields, 17 hectares of pasture land and 96 hectares of woods.

1944 agricultural record

In addition, the record shows that there was no tractor so horses were used to pull the farm equipment. The cows were milked by hand in the morning and the evening. Also, there was no running water in the house but there was electric lighting. However, a wooden stove was used for the cooking.

The census asked if certain agricultural tools and equipment were used on the farm such as a manure spreader (stallgödselspridare), potato harvester (potatisupptagningsmaskin) plus other tools.

By viewing the National Agricultural Census 1944 record, we have a much better understanding of hemmansägare, Per Georg Eliasson’s life on his farm at Stenviksstrand 1:10.

There are in total 44,000 farms throughout Sweden in the National Agricultural Census 1944 including many small farms as well as some city properties. Thus, you may want to search for persons who live on the outskirts of cities who you may not think of as farmers.

These census forms were filled out primarily by the farmers. Unfortunately, many had poor handwriting resulting in errors in the registration both for personal names and place names (parish name should be correct). Thus, one may need to be creative in the search and search for alternative spellings.
