Swedish Genealogy Workshops in Wisconsin, Illinois and Kansas

The SwedGen Tour, a group of genealogists from Sweden who have made annual trips to North America for the sole purpose of helping Swedish Americans learn more about their Swedish heritage and discover their Swedish roots, will visit Madison, Wisconsin, Rock Island, Illinois and Lindsborg, Kansas this year. Kathy Meade of ArkivDigital will also travel with the group and give presentations on ArkivDigital.

Madison, Wisconsin – Saturday, September 23, 2017
The first SwedGen 2017 event will be sponsored by the Wisconsin Historical Society in Madison, Wisconsin on Saturday, September 23rd. This event will include Swedish genealogy and ArkivDigital presentations. There will be an opportunity for a limited number of participants to have a one-on-one genealogy session with one of the Swedish genealogists. For program details and registration, click here.

Rock Island, Illinois – Saturday, September 30, 2017
The second SwedGen 2017 event will be sponsored by the Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois on Saturday, September 30th. This will be a repeat of the program given in Madison. Also, a number of registered participants will have an opportunity for a private research session with one of the Swedish genealogists. Lindsborg, Kansas – October 7-8, 2017
The final SwedGen 2017 event will be held in Lindsborg, Kansas which is known as “Little Sweden U. S. A.” on October 7-8.  Enjoy a wide range of lectures for both the beginner and advanced researcher given by both Swedish and American experts over two days. Participants will be offered half day sessions in the computer lab to gain hands-on experience using ArkivDigital and to work on their research projects. Swedish American Genealogy Workshop in Wisconsin
The Wisconsin Historical Society is sponsoring a Swedish American Genealogy workshop on Saturday, November 5th. Kathy Meade of ArkivDigital will be giving four presentations on Swedish genealogy. Exploring your Swedish Roots at the Swedish American Museum in Chicago
The Swedish American Genealogical Society at the Swedish American Museum is sponsoring a research day on Sunday, November 13th. Along with the museum’s volunteers, Kathy Meade of ArkivDigital along with two genealogists from Sweden: Ingrid Nilsson and Elisabeth Thorsell will be available to provide one-on-one assistance for questions about Swedish genealogical research, ArkivDigital and translation assistance. Click here for program and registration information.

Hands-On ArkivDigital Workshop in “Little Sweden U.S.A.”

leslyeArkivDigital and the McPherson County Old Mill Museum in Lindsborg, Kansas have a partnership whereby the museum sponsors spring and fall ArkivDigital workshops. The workshop offers participants two days filled with presentations and hands-on training using ArkivDigital. The 2016 fall workshop will be held the weekend October 1-2.

The workshops are a great opportunity to learn how to research your Swedish roots using ArkivDigital.  Shari from Kansas who attended the spring 2016 workshop summed up the weekend experience by saying, “This was a very useful weekend for me. I had access to people I could ask questions for two days straight. It was nice to be able to work on my research and have someone to talk a problem over with.”

Lindsborg, Kansas is known as “Little Sweden U.S.A.” because it was settled by Swedish emigrants in 1869 from Värmland. The town is well known for the Svensk Hyllningsfest, and other celebrations promoting its Swedish heritage. The Svensk Hyllningsfest has been held in October of odd-numbered years since 1941.

One of the local attractions is the McPherson County Old Mill Museum with exhibits in 12 buildings showing the lives of early Kansas settlers. One of the buildings is the Swedish Pavilion from the 1904 World’s Fair. The museum receives many visitors exploring their Swedish ancestry and requests for Swedish research.

Attend one of these workshops and discover your Swedish roots as well as meet other participants from across Swedish-America and together celebrate your Swedish heritage. Explore and enjoy the Swedish community of Lindsborg and its small town charm.

ArkivDigital Visits Iowa

The Iowa Genealogical Society will be sponsoring a Swedish Day in Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday, November 14th.  Kathy Meade of ArkivDigital will be giving three presentations:

  • Have Swedish Roots and don’t know how to get started?
  • Using Swedish Church Records – A Case Study using ArkivDigital
  • More Swedish Records online with ArkivDigital

This will be a great opportunity to learn how to research your Swedish roots using ArkivDigital as well as discovering the wealth of records in ArkivDigital’s online library. Tips will be given both for the beginner and advanced researcher.

Kathy Meade of ArkivDigital will also travel with the group and give presentations on how to use ArkivDigital.

The first SwedGen 2015 event will be held in Lindsborg, Kansas which is known as “Little Sweden U. S. A.” on September 26-27, 2015.  Enjoy a wide range of lectures by both Swedish and American experts over two days. Participants will be offered half day sessions in the computer lab to gain hands-on experience using ArkivDigital and to work on their research projects. The speakers will be available to assist the participants.

The second SwedGen 2015 event will be a one-day workshop held on Saturday, October 3, 2015 at the Aurora Community College in Aurora, Colorado. This event will include ArkivDigital and Swedish genealogy presentations as well as an opportunity for one-on-one Swedish genealogy research assistance. ArkivDigital and the McPherson County Old Mill Museum in Lindsborg, Kansas, have a partnership whereby the museum sponsors spring and fall ArkivDigital workshops. The workshop offers participants two days filled with presentations and hands-on training using ArkivDigital.

The 2015 spring workshop will be held the weekend of March 28-29 and the fall workshop will be held on the weekend of September 26-27. We still have a few openings for the spring workshop and registration is open for the fall workshop.

The workshops are a great opportunity to learn how to research your Swedish roots using ArkivDigital. One participant from a past workshop, Leslye from Missouri, summed up the weekend experience by saying, “This weekend was wonderful….personally I learn so much quicker when I can be involved with a hands on approach. I was able to accomplish more in two days than in the past 5 years”.
