More birth, marriage and death searchable name indexes!

A few months ago, ArkivDigital published a name searchable index for birth, marriage and death records for all the parishes within Kronoberg county from the earliest times to the year 1859.(See previous blog.) We announced earlier that we would be adding indexes for later years for parishes in Kronoberg as well as for some parishes in neighboring counties. Now the publication has been completed.

The end year in the index does vary by parish. In general, most of the indexes for the birth records go up to 1920 and the marriage and death indexes go up to 1944. But in many parishes the end year is earlier. Regarding indexes for parishes in neighboring counties (primarily Blekinge and Jönköping counties as well as a couple of parishes from Kalmar and Kristianstad counties), the number of years that have been indexed varies. You can find out what parishes and what years have been indexed at the following links:

The register was created by the Kronoberg’s Genealogical Society and can be published thanks to an agreement between the association and ArkivDigital.

Of course, we are still just beginning, but through partnerships with genealogical societies, other organizations and private individuals, we can hopefully achieve this goal within the not too distant future.

In order to access ArkivDigital’s birth, marriage and death index, one needs to have an All-in-one subscription. The index is only available in the web version of our software, which you will find at https://app.arkivdigital.se. Birth, marriage and death index for Nederluleå

Now for the third time this fall, we have added more entries to our name searchable birth, marriage and death indexes. Previously, we added index entries for the Eskilstuna area (see previous blog) and Kronoberg county (see previous blog). With a partnership with an individual, about 53,000 index entries for birth, marriage and deaths for Nederluleå parish in Norrbotten county from the oldest times to about 1860 have been added to the index.

nederlulea birth imageSearching in name index, Birth index, parts of Sweden

Nederluleå belonged to one of Sweden’s more populated rural parishes, which explains the large number of index entries. The parish received its name in 1831 when Överluleå was broken out to its own parish. The combined parish which existed previously was named Luleå parish. For the period prior to 1831, the index includes the combined parish which means even the area which today includes Överluleå parish.

Since Nederluleå is now part of the birth, marriage and death register, two goals have now been achieved. One, the register now comprises a total of more than two million entries and secondly it also includes entries that have been prepared by a private individual. The records that were added to the index previously were created by  societies or organizations. Our goal for the long run is that the index will cover all of Sweden and in order to achieve this goal, it is important for different types of partnerships, both big and small!

Population of Sweden 1975

The searchable name index registers for the Population of Sweden 1950 and the Population of Sweden 1960 were added to the ArkivDigital online library a couple of years ago. Now we are moving forward and adding a name searchable index for the Population of Sweden 1975. In principle, this is an index of everyone living in Sweden at the end of 1975.

The register is searchable by name and includes full name, birth date, birth parish, marital status, occupation and information about place of residence. Individuals are grouped by households so you can see information about other members of the household. Additional information in the database includes the place of registration in the previous tax register. In many cases you will find a link to the first image of the parish book that will contain the person’s birth record.

Military Service Cards (Stamkort) Search Index

The digitized conscription service cards (stamkort) for Swedish men who enrolled in the military from 1902 to 1941 were previously published in ArkivDigital and have been available for some time. Up until now, it has taken some time and effort to find the military service card for a desired person. There are nearly two million cards and these are spread out in a large number of archives which in turn used different methods for organizing the cards.

The military service card includes the name of the conscript, birth date, birth place and enrollment number. Additional information included in the service card are the branch of the service the recruit served in, service time (including basic and additional military training as well as emergency preparation service during World War II), promotions, record of punishments if any and even sometimes the conscript’s home address and civil occupation.

The draft registration age changed in 1914 from age 21 years to 20, which means that the military service cards that are online cover men born approximately between the years 1881 to 1921.

Now, these military service cards have been indexed by name in ArkivDigital making it simple to find the desired card.  Select new index search and then select the military service cards index. Fill in the name and or birth information, select the desired post in the result list and click on the link which opens the image of the military service card. How much simpler can it be!

The above record shows a search for Karl Sigvard Gustavsson born on the 2nd of December 1912 in the parish of Horn, resulting in the above index record. Click on the link and you will see the image of the military service card. On the card, you will find notes about his military service from his enrollment in 1932 to his discharge in 1959.

To access the military service cards index, one must have an All-in-one subscription and the register is only available in our web version of our software. You can find our web version by going to: https://app.arkivdigital.se.

2017 – Another good year for ArkivDigital!

2017 was another good year for ArkivDigital as shown in the recently published annual report. Net sales increased by over 16 percent to nearly 33 million Swedish kronor. Nearly 10 million new images were added to the online archive during the year, which is a record high in the company’s history, as well as approximately 25 million name-register entries were added. The number of subscribers at year-end was close to 26,000.

AD-2017

Mikael Karlsson, Managing Director since 2012, expressed his pleasure regarding the good results. “In five years, the company’s net sales have nearly doubled, and operating profits have increased nearly fivefold. Naturally, we are happy with what we have achieved but we have much higher goals.”

Mikael Karlsson summarized the continuing priorities for the company:

  • Continued digitization of archive documents and other sources.
  • More name registers and other types of indexes that make it easier to search in the archives.
  • Instructions and help texts within the software to ease research, especially for beginners.
  • A family tree that allows one not only to retrieve information from ArkivDigital but to organize and structure the data.
  • Smoother payment methods.
  • Increased interaction between ArkivDigital and researchers but also directly between researchers.

“In short, ArchivDigital will be better in all areas,” stated Mikael Karlsson.

The annual shareholders’ meeting will be held on May 22 at the company’s headquarters in Lyrestad. The board is proposing a dividend of 52 öre per share.

A quarter of a million portrait images!

ArkivDigital has recently added about 250,000 portraits to its online archive. The database includes personal photographs from three Stockholm photography studios: Jaeger, Bergne and Welinder photographed from 1920 up to the 1970’s. Most of the portraits are of Stockholmers but there are even photographs from other parts of the country. Along with the portrait collection is a name searchable register.

In order to view the portrait register, one must have an All-in-one subscription and access the service by using the web version of our program software. In order to access the portrait collection, do the following:

  • In the program, select “New index search”.
  • Select “Portrait collection”.
  • You can begin to search.

portrait search

Most of the portrait orders include several images. There are both portraits representing only one person and also group pictures. The amount of information that is shown on the register will vary by image as well as studio. Below is an index record for Astrid Lindgren author of the Pippi Longstocking books for a photograph ordered in 1944.

index portrait lindgren

The type of information that is shown in the register for all three studios includes:

  • Envelope information – The name which is mentioned most often is the person who ordered the photograph. Often this can be the same person who is in the picture.
  • Studio – The name of the studio.
  • Order – The order number. For the Welinder studio, some orders are divided into multiple envelope and there are multiple entries in the register. Under “shared orders” are images linked to the same order.
  • Date – This may be a complete date (day, month and year) or just a year.

Plus, there is a link to the portrait image. Below is the image for Fru Astrid Lindgren.
