Swedish American Church documents provide genealogical information

hanepictureWe have written previously about the Swedish American church books in ArkivDigital. (See previous blog entry). Besides the church books, there are anniversary documents for many congregations and these publications often contain historical information about the congregation’s founding as well as genealogical information about some of the early church members. This information can help one jump the pond and trace the family in the Swedish church books. For many North Americans, one source for finding out where their ancestor came from in Sweden is often a Swedish American church book.

One interesting document is the one produced for the Centennial Anniversary of the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bucklin, Missouri in 1970. Here you will find historical information for several families. One example is for Andrew Fredrick Hane’s family.

The text below states that he was born on “June 23, 1828 in Ostergutland, Sweden” and that he immigrated to American in 1880 with his wife Maria, born on “October 15, 1840, Grosmark, Varmland, Sweden” with four children. At the top of the page, you will find an image of Andrew, Maria and a child.

We can find information about the family in the Swedish church books by using Maria as our starting point. The text provides information about Maria’s birth date, birth parish and immigration year. When one looks at the American records, often there is an Americanization of Swedish person and place names. In this case Grosmark, Varmland refers to Gräsmark, Värmland. As well, the county of Östergotland was spelled Ostergutland.

To search for Maria in the Swedish church books, we will begin by looking for her birth record.

  • Go to the search window.
  • Select the county archive and select Värmland.
  • Select the parish, Gräsmark.
  • Look for the birth volume that contains the year 1840.
  • Search for a birth record for Maria on October 15, 1840.
  • You will find record at the following reference: Gräsmark CI:5 (1838-1859) Image 18 / page 29 (AID: v6598.b18.s29, NAD: SE/VA/13165) (Link).

By tracing Maria in the church books forward, you will find that she marries Anders Fredrik Hane and they have several children and in 1880 the family immigrates to North American from Skedevi, Östergotland. You can see the notation about the move to North America in the household record shown below.

Stockholm Folk Register Cards (1926-1939)

Folkregister

If you are researching in Stockholm city during the period of 1926-1939, you will find the Stockholm Folk Register Cards helpful. You will find one set of cards for the recorded deaths in Stockholm and another set of cards showing movement (utflyttade). These records are found in the archive, “Överståthållarämbetet, Skatteverket, Mantalsavdelningen, Folkregisterkort (ÖÄ)”

You can search for the records in ArkivDigital by doing the following:

  • Go to ArkivDigital Online.
  • Open search window.
  • Click on advanced search.
  • Select Stockholms stad.
  • Select Överståthållarämbetet, Skatteverket, Mantalsavdelningen, Folkregisterkort (ÖÄ).
  • Or you can enter “folkregister” in the search box and search.

These cards are organized alphabetically for the entire city of Stockholm. You do not need to know the parish where the person lived. However, the sorting is by phonetic spelling. For example both Carlsson’s and Karlsson’s are included in the K’s.

The death cards can be used as a type of person register for the death books. On the front side, you will find the deceased person’s death date, birth date and birth place. On the back side of the card you will find the address where the person lived at the time of his death.

The cards showing the movement of persons are also interesting. The example images below show both sides of the card. The front side of the card shows the head of the household, his wife and child with their birth dates and birth parish. The back side of the card shows the date they moved and the parish where they moved to along with the address.

It was very common to publish a commemorative booklet in connection with an anniversary celebration in many Swedish American congregations.  In addition to the written information in the publication such as the history of the congregation, there are often various kinds of photos such as church buildings, pastors, elected officers of various organizations but occasionally even photos of the regular parishioners.

In the commemorative 75th anniversary booklet published in 1960 for the Bethel Lutheran Church you will find portraits of confirmation classes from the period 1886-1957. The above image shows the confirmation classes for the years: 1904, 1909, 1914 and 1917. Most of the candidates for confirmation have Swedish sounding names.

For several years a large number of records for Åland, Finland have been available in ArkivDigital’s online library. A good overview of the records available is summarized in the blog post, “Ancestors from Åland, Finland? You can find them in ArkivDigital”.

However, the seamen house records for Åland were missing. Now, we have recently added the seamen house records for the Mariehamn seaman house and the Vårdö seaman house. You can find information about the Ålandic seamen and ships in the various records such as the signing on ledgers (påmönstrings-), signing off ledgers,  (avmönstrings-) and seaman rolls (sjömansrullor). Most of the photographed material originates from the end of the 1800’s along with records for the first half of the 1900’s.

The above image is a crew list for the sailing ship, Nils, whose home port is Vårdö, Finland for the year 1926.

You can find the seamen records in ArkivDigital by doing the following:

  • Go to the search window in ArkivDigital.
  • Select advanced options.

For those who are interested in learning more about sailors or other persons who served in the Navy, the Naval Ship Muster Rolls (Skeppsmönsterrullor) offer information about a ship’s sailings as well as who served on the vessel. These muster rolls, which we have photographed, begin in the year 1689 and end in the year 1873.

The image above is from an 1808 Naval ship muster roll and references the crew on the ship, Dristigheten. The image shows sailors from the Second Södra Möre (beginning of the list starts on the previous page) and the Third Södra Möre Naval companies (båtsmanskompanier). The column on the far right, “Annotationer öfver afgången” or “Remarks about departure” is of special interest. Here you will find notes as to why a crew member left the ship such as transferred to another ship, became ill or died.

You will find the Naval ship muster rolls (skeppsmönsterrullorna) in ArkivDigital by doing the following:

  • Go to the search window.
  • Select advanced options.
  • Select archive type: military.
  • Select the following archive: “Flottans arkiv: Amiralitetskollegiets med efterföljares kontor, Arméns flotta, loggböcker, rullor m.m.: Sjöexpeditioner, skeppsmönsterrullor 1689-1873”.

Passenger Ship Lists for Helsingborg and Norrköping

In a previous blog written last December, we stated that passenger ship manifests for emigrants leaving from Göteborg (1869-1935), Malmö (1874-1939) and Stockholm (1869-1940) ports are available on ArkivDigital.  We have recently added passenger lists for persons leaving from Helsingborg. For  Norrköping, we have added the passport journals  (passjournaler) for persons traveling both in and outside of Sweden.

An example of a manifest for a ship leaving from Helsingborg is shown below.
