New image information in the image viewer

As many of you may have already discovered, we have added some image information to the software. When you open a volume, you can see this in the left corner of the image.

image viewer

The image information includes the archive name, county code, volume code with start and end years along with the image and page number. This is the same source citation that you see when you copy pure source identifier. In the above image, you see the following source identifier: Pelarne (H) AI:4 1841-1846, Image 37/Page 49 or the name of the parish archive, Pelarne, county code (H) which is the code for Kalmar county, symbol for the volume type (AI:4) or household book and the years covered followed by the image and page number.

Note – You can find a list of the county codes by clicking here.

For those using the English interface who do not want the image information to be visible, you can hide it by going to the Start menu and clicking on “Settings” as shown below.

Name Registers

Name RegisterSläktnamnsregister Skaraborg SlReg:2 (0-1800) Image 6 / page 2 (AID: v187522.b6.s2, NAD: SE/GLA/75003) Link.

For those who research in Göteborg och Bohus, Skaraborg, Älvsborg, Värmland or Västernorrland counties, we wish to point out name registers (släktnamnsregister) that are accessible on ArkivDigital. If one is searching for a person who has a non-patronymic name meaning a name that does not end with a “son” or “dotter”, these registers can be very helpful. Examples of groups of people who had a non-patronymic name were the nobility, priests and not least the many soldiers.

Above is an image from the name register volume for household records for Dimbo härad in Skaraborg county.  If you were searching for Christina Aminoff shown in the above image, you would find her in the household book for Varv parish in Skaraborg county on page 38 in volume AI:2. To search for a name and then to be directed to the page number in the household record naturally saves much time.

The name registers cover normally the period from the beginning of the church books until the year 1800. For Västernorrland, however, the register continues until 1830 (for Medelpad and norra Ångermanland) and respectively to 1856 (for södra Ångermanland). The type of church books which registers exist vary from place to place.  There are registers for household records, moving in-out records, birth, marriage and death records but this varies from county to county and district (härad) to district as to what type of registers are available for that area.

You can find these registers in ArkivDigital by typing in “Släktnamnsregister” in the search box and click search or you can select “advanced options” and search for registers in the archive type selection.  These registers are divided into six archives, one for each county with the exception for Älvsborg county which has separate archives for Dalsland and Västgötadelen.

Birth record search and reading example

At many conferences in North America, many will stop by our booth and state that they have Swedish ancestry but are intimidated by the Swedish records because they are in Swedish. We explain that the church books are mostly tables of names, dates and places with headings and terms that are used repeatedly. Once one becomes familiar with the commonly used words, one finds it can be easy to work with the records even though one does not speak Swedish.

Today, we will search for a birth record and show that most of the record contains names, dates and place names. In order to search for a birth record, one needs the child’s Swedish name, birth parish and the birth date. Our search will be for the birth record of Elin Andersdotter born on the 13th of July, 1841 in the parish of Västra Torsås in Kronoberg county.

To begin the search, go to ArkivDigital and click on Search Archive. There are several methods for searching:

  • One method is to just enter Västra Torsås in the search box and click search. You will need to type in the Swedish characters.
  • Since we know the county, you can select advanced options and select county and then Kronoberg. You will now see a list of all the archives for Kronoberg county. Scroll down until you find Västra Torsås and then highlight the entry.
  • On the right side, you will see a volume list for Västra Torsås as shown in the image below.

search window

  • Search for the birth and christening records book that includes the year 1841.
  • Select the birth and christenings volume:  Västra Torsås C:5 (1815-1848).
  • Double click to open the book.
  • Search for a table of contents in the beginning of the book. Many volumes include multiple types of records.
  • In this volume, you will find a table of contents (Innehåll) (see image below).

birth contentsVästra Torsås C:5 (1815-1848) Image 3 (AID: v29905.b3, NAD: SE/VALA/00453) Link.

The table of contents shows the following entries:

  • Födelse- och dopbok 1815-1843 or birth and baptism book
  • ”              ”       ”             1844-1848
  • Lysnings- och vigselbok 1815-1848 or banns and marriage book
  • Död-och begravningsbok 1815-1848 or death and burial book

On the far right side, you will see the page numbers for each record type. Since we are looking for a birth record in 1841, we see that the birth records between 1815 and 1843 begin on page 5 and end on page 430. We now need to look for the birth records for the year 1841. One can estimate a page number and go directly to a page and then page forward or backwards until you find the records for 1841. Once you find the year 1841, then you search for the birth date, July 13th.  You will find Elin’s birth record on page 407.

The content and format of the birth records do vary by time and minister.  The format for this book is the following:

  • Column 1 – Child’s name
  • Column 2 – Birth date
  • Column 3 – Baptismal date
  • Column 4 – Parents’ names and residence followed by the names of the baptismal witnesses
  • Column 5 – Mother’s age

AID – ArkivDigital’s Unique Code for Images

Every image within ArkivDigital’s online archive has a unique identification code named, AID. This identifier should not be used as a source citation for your records but only as a help tool or aid to quickly locate an image in the archive.

You can generate source citations for records while using ArkivDigital online by using the keyboard shortcut “Ctrl + C” (or “⌘ + C” on a Mac) which will generate a citation containing the parish name,  volume ID, years, image / page number, image AID number and NAD (National Archive Database) code for a church book record.

Source citation example for a household record in a church book:
 Älvsbacka AI:11 (1841-1845) Image 17 / page 11 (AID: v9037.b17.s11, NAD: SE/VA/13662)

Source citation example for a military record:
Generalmönsterrullor – Skaraborgs regemente 444 (1717-1717) Image 16 (AID: v60256.b16, NAD: SE/KrA/0023)

You can then paste the citation into a word processing program or a genealogy program by using the keyboard shortcut “Ctrl + V” (“⌘ + V” on a Mac).

If you use the shortcut “Ctrl + A” (”⌘ + A” on a Mac), only the AID number will be created.  For the above church record example: v9037.b17.s11.

AID is useful when you want to quickly go to a specific page or image within ArkivDigital online. You can write or paste in the AID number in the AID search box in the bottom right of the program. (See the picture below).  Click on Go or hit the enter key.

AID window

In order to use the AID code to find a record in ArkivDigital’s online archive, you must have an active ArkivDigital subscription and your program version must be 1.4 or later.

You can download the ArkivDigital user guide for more information about the functions within the program, ArkivDigital online.
