More modern church books in ArkivDigital

During January and February, we were busy photographing church books whose confidentiality or protection from the law of privacy expired at the end of last year. The volumes included are congregation books, birth and death records with an end year of 1946. In addition, we also photographed moving in and out books and marriage books with the starting year 1946 and year ending no later than 1980.

The photographing for Blekinge, Gotland, Halland, Jämtland, Jönköping, Kopparberg, Kristianstad, Kronoberg, Malmohus, Södermanland, Uppsala, Västmanland, Örebro and Östergötland counties are now complete. Newly photographed images from several other counties are now available online and more will be added in the near future.

You can find more detail as to what volumes are available in ArkivDigital such as the modern church books and other types of volumes on our website, (link to website page).

Finally, we would also like to mention a few words about the birth and baptismal books.  In these books, it is common that notes may be added to a record, for example a note relating to an adoption, often decades after the event. The 70-year privacy law begins from the date of the last inserted note. For example, a note might have been entered in 1956 in a book containing birth records between 1930 and 1946. This means that the book is protected by the privacy law for 70 years after 1956 or it can’t be photographed until 2027.  So in some cases, we currently do not have the opportunity to photograph some of the birth and baptismal books even though they do not contain any birth records for persons born after 1946.

Estate Inventories (Bouppteckningar) 1901-1960 – Status update

ArkivDigital has been photographing estate inventory records for the period, 1901 to 1960 for a while. We have mentioned this activity several times in our blogs, the last one was about a year ago: see previous blog. We have photographed much more since then and thought it was a good time to give a status update.

Our photographing progress varies between counties. Below is a status by county of what records are complete followed by a summary of the records we are currently photographing. Our goal is to photograph estate inventories up to and including the year 1960.  But in Gotland, we have been successful in photographing some later records. For all counties, single volumes may be missing in cases where they were in such poor physical condition that they could not be photographed.

Estate inventories are available in ArkivDigital up to the year noted:

1920: Jönköping, Kalmar, Östergötland
1930: Kopparberg, Kronoberg, Norrbotten, Södermanland, Uppsala, Västerbotten, Västernorrland, Västmanland, Örebro
1940: Gävleborg, Jämtland*, Stockholm
1945: Göteborg och Bohus, Skaraborg, Älvsborg
1950: Värmland
1960: Blekinge, Halland, Kristianstad, Malmöhus
1980: Gotland, (Visby city court 1945-1961 missing)

Photographing is in progress for the following:

1921-1930: Jönköping, Kalmar, Östergötland.
1931-1940: Kopparberg, Norrbotten, Södermanland, Uppsala, Västerbotten, Västernorrland, Västmanland, Örebro
1941-1945: Stockholm
1946-1950: Göteborg och Bohus, Skaraborg, Älvsborg
1951-1955: Värmland

*For Jämtland county, there are some estate inventories missing for the period 1861-1900. But currently photographing is in progress for these records. For the rest of Sweden, the estate inventories from earliest time to the year 1900 are available in ArkivDigital and have been for some time.

During the 1900’s, more estate inventories were typewritten. In the above image, which is from the Eksjö rådhusrätt och magistrats collection of estate inventories from the year 1926, we see the end or last page of a typewritten estate inventory and the beginning page of a handwritten one.

At the end of January, we announced some exciting news in a blog post. The National Swedish Archives changed a decision which had previously prohibited ArkivDigital from photographing some church books after 1935, (see previous blog entry). This opened up a long awaited opportunity for us, namely to photograph the modern church books up to and including the law of privacy limits (currently the year 1945). During the late winter, spring and summer, we have been busy photographing parish congregation books, moving in/out registers, birth, marriage and books. As a result of this work, 20 of the 25 counties are now complete.

Completed counties: Blekinge, Gotland, Gävleborg, Halland, Jämtland, Jönköping, Kalmar, Kopparberg, Kristianstad, Kronoberg, Malmöhus, Norrbotten, Stockholm, Södermanland, Värmland, Västerbotten, Västernorrland, Västmanland and Örebro.

Counties with photographing in progress: Göteborg och Bohuslän, Skaraborg, Uppsala and Östergötland.

For the remaining county, Älvsborg, we will soon begin to photograph these books.

You can find more detail as to what volumes are available in ArkivDigital such as the modern church books and other types of volumes on our website, (link to website page).

We want to emphasize that that there are different privacy rules for different series which influence which volumes we can photograph. In an earlier blog, (see earlier blog) we outlined some of the privacy rules for various types of church books, (see third and fourth paragraphs).

After the church books, the estate inventories (bouppteckningar), are probably the most valuable source for many genealogists.  The estate inventories provide genealogical information as well as help one gain a better understanding of one’s ancestor’s life. The estate inventory details the assets and debts of the deceased person’s estate.

For some time now, the estate inventories from earliest times to 1900 have been available in ArkivDigital’s online library.  The one exception has been Jämtland county where the records between 1861 and 1900 have not been added. However, we will be adding these records in the near future.

For the period 1901-1960, we have reached different milestones in various parts of the country.  Below is a summary of what estate inventories are now available by county followed by a summary of the volumes we are currently photographing. There may be single copies missing in each county in cases where the original records were in such poor physical condition that they could not be photographed.

For those interested in Sweden during World War II, we want to mention that we are currently photographing Beredskapsverket, Avdelning 1 (Defense Readiness Agency, Section 1). This is an official military history collection describing the military defense readiness program for the years 1939-1945.  Work began on these volumes in 1941 but was not completed until after the war. In a future blog, we will present more detailed information about these records.

During March, we have added documents from the Swedish parishes in Copenhagen, Oslo, Berlin and Paris. In a future blog we will post more information about these records.

In addition, the church accounts for Jämtland county from earliest times to the year 1800 along with The Public Orphanage of Stockholm’s (Allmänna barnhusets) orphanage rolls from earliest times to the year 1880 were added to the online archive in March.

School Records in ArkivDigital

ArkivDigital has photographed a number of secondary school enrollment lists and other types of school documents. Before education became compulsory in Sweden, often only sons of priests or persons of a little higher social standing attended school. In some cases sons of farmers were given the possibility of formal schooling.

The secondary schools were located in the cities and these enrollment lists and other documents provide a glimpse of a student’s life.  In some records you will find information about the student, where he came from and the student’s father’s name and occupation. Below is an example from Karolinska School in Örebro.

karolinska school
Karolinska skolan D2A:3 (1861-1881) Image 51 / page 92 (AID: v199611.b51.s92, NAD: SE/OSA/1000)  Link

The record title headings are:

  • Inskrifnings dag           Matriculation or enrollment date
  • Klass                                Class
  • Namn                              Name
  • Född                                Birth
  • Födelse ort                     Birth place
  • Fadren                            Father

The above entry is for the student Gustaf Edvard Axelsson who was born in Filipstad (old spelling Philipstad) parish in Värmland on February 3, 1851. His father is N. F. Axelsson who is a merchant (handlande).

Today, you will find school records from Skåne, Blekinge, Halland and Örebro in ArkivDigital’s online archive. You can find these school records by going to advanced search, selecting archive type and searching in the grammar school and school archives.

Estate Inventories (Bouppteckningar) Status Update

ArkivDigital_logo_rgb (1)

We have mentioned in previous blogs that we are currently photographing the estate inventories (bouppteckningar) for all of Sweden for the period 1901-1940. For two counties, Gotland and Jämtland, the photographing is complete for these years and the records are available in ArkivDigital’s online archive. For the other counties, photographing is in progress and proceeding at full speed.

We have chosen to photograph the estate inventories at the respective provincial archives in groups of 10-year sequences. This means that we first photograph the period 1901-1910, then the period 1911-1920 and continue in this manner. Below is the current status of the photographing for each county.

Photographing is in progress for the time period 1901-1910 for the following counties: Jönköping, Kalmar, Kopparberg, Kronoberg, Södermanland, Uppsala, Värmland Västmanland, Örebro and Östergötland.

Concerning the southern part of Sweden, the estate inventories for Blekinge and Halland counties are available online up to 1920.  Malmöhus and Kristianstad county estate inventories are complete for the period 1901-1910 and the majority of the estate inventories for the period 1911-1920 are also available online.

For Göteborg och Bohus, Skaraborg and Älvsborg counties, the majority of the estate inventories for the period 1901-1910 along with half of the estate inventories for 1911-1920 are available online. For these counties, we were not able to photograph these estate inventories in exact chronological order.  At the moment there are some gaps but these will be corrected later.

Regarding Gävleborg, Västernorrland, Västerbotten and Norrbotten counties, the photographing for the period 1901-1910 is complete and the material is available online. However, there are a few individual volumes missing that we have not been able to access.  We are in the process of adding volumes for the period 1911-1920.

The estate inventories for Stockholm county for the period 1901-1910 are complete and volumes are being added for the period 1911-1920. We have decided not to begin photographing the estate inventories for Stockholm city until we finish photographing the estate inventories for Stockholm county up to 1940. Once these volumes are complete and available online, we will begin photographing the Stockholm city estate inventories.

The photographing of estate inventories will continue at a brisk pace during 2015 and newly photographed volumes will be added continually.
