Swedish Portraits (Svenska Porträttgalleri)

ArkivDigital’s online library includes many types of records such as the church books, estate inventories, court records, tax registers and military records. But there are many additional types of records within ArkivDigital including scanned books. One interesting set is the Svenskt Porträttgalleri.

The Svenskt Porträttgalleri includes 26 volumes of portraits and biographical data for over 20,000 persons who represented key segments of Swedish life including clergy, military officers, academics, doctors, publishers, financiers, and others. The series includes a general register or an index which lists all the individuals in alphabetical order and points to the volume that shows the photograph and biography. You can find these volumes in ArkivDigital by going to archive search and selecting archive type, printed litterature.

As an example, we will look for Gustaf Unonius, who was the founder of St. Ansgarius Church established in 1849 in Chicago, Illinois. This was the first Scandinavian church in Chicago. To find the biographical data for Gustav Unonius in the Svenskt Porträttgalleri, do the following:

  • Access ArkivDigital (app.arkivdigital.se).
  • Select archive search.
  • Select archive type – printed litterature.
  • Select the archive – Svenskt Porträttgalleri.
  • Open the general register volume. The names are listed in alphabetical order.
  • Below is the register entry.

The information in the register is an abbreviated biographical sketch along with pointing out where we can find his portrait and a more detailed biography in Volume 15 (XV). The information shown in the register is the following:

Unonius, Gustaf Elias Marius was born in Helsingfors (Helsinki, Finland) on the 25th of August 1810. He was a pastor at an Anglo-American church, a customs collector in Grisslehamn and died in Hacksta parish in Uppsala county on the 14th of October 1902.

The next step is to go to Volume XV. You will see that Volume XV and XVI are in the same volume in ArkivDigital. The names are listed in alphabetical order for each volume. Browse through the book to search for Gustaf Unonius. Below is his photograph and a more detailed biographical sketch.

In the above record, you will find a few more details about Gustaf Elias Marius Unonius’s life. Additional information in this record includes that he studied in Uppsala, emigrated to America in 1841, studied at an Anglo-American seminary in Wisconsin in 1843, ordained to the priesthood in 1845, was a pastor at the Swedish-Norwegian parish, St. Ansgarius in Chicago in 1849 and still a priest in the Anglo-American church and returned to Sweden in 1858. In 1860, for his work with the Swedish immigrants in America he was given a reward of 3,000 riksdaler. He worked as a customs official in Grisslehamn from 1863 to 1888. The last portion of the sketch list some of his publications and probably the best known being Minnen fr. en Sjuttonåring vistelse in nordvestra Amerika or Memoir for a Seventeen-Year Stay i Northwest America. This work has been translated into English with the title of A Pioneer in Northwest America 1841-1858, The Memoirs of Gustaf Unonius.

The Svenskt Porträttgalleri is a wonderful source for finding photographs and some biographical information about persons active in Swedish society.

For several years a large number of records for Åland, Finland have been available in ArkivDigital’s online library. A good overview of the records available is summarized in the blog post, “Ancestors from Åland, Finland? You can find them in ArkivDigital”.

However, the seamen house records for Åland were missing. Now, we have recently added the seamen house records for the Mariehamn seaman house and the Vårdö seaman house. You can find information about the Ålandic seamen and ships in the various records such as the signing on ledgers (påmönstrings-), signing off ledgers,  (avmönstrings-) and seaman rolls (sjömansrullor). Most of the photographed material originates from the end of the 1800’s along with records for the first half of the 1900’s.

The above image is a crew list for the sailing ship, Nils, whose home port is Vårdö, Finland for the year 1926.

You can find the seamen records in ArkivDigital by doing the following:

  • Go to the search window in ArkivDigital.
  • Select advanced options.
  • Select the archive type: sjömanshus.
  • There you will find a list of all the seamen house records that are in ArkivDigital.

After the church books, the estate inventories (bouppteckningar), are probably the most valuable source for many genealogists.  The estate inventories provide genealogical information as well as help one gain a better understanding of one’s ancestor’s life. The estate inventory details the assets and debts of the deceased person’s estate.

For some time now, the estate inventories from earliest times to 1900 have been available in ArkivDigital’s online library.  The one exception has been Jämtland county where the records between 1861 and 1900 have not been added. However, we will be adding these records in the near future.

New records in ArkivDigital

Produktkatalog

Our online library has now nearly 54 million images which equates to more than 100 million pages for your Swedish family and historical research. Many new records were added to ArkivDigital during the last month. Below is a summary of the highlights.

Estate Inventories
We continue to focus on photographing the estate inventories (bouppteckningar) for the period from 1901 to 1940. Below is a summary of the new additions.

All estate inventories from 1901 to 1940 for Blekinge and Halland counties are now available. Photographing is in progress for Malmöhus and Kristianstad counties for the years 1931 to 1940. The estate inventories for Stockholm county (except for Stockholm city) are now available up to 1930. Only a few volumes for the period 1931 to 1940 remain to be photographed. We will begin to photograph the estate inventories for the period from 1901 to 1940 for Stockholm city.

Concerning estate inventories, we want to mention some words about Borås city court and magistrate where the records are not preserved at the regional archive but instead at the city archive in Borås. We have been busy in Borås this past winter and early spring photographing and as a result the estate inventories for Borås are now available up to 1960.

Population/tax registers and real estate books
Other materials added during the last month were the district archives (häradsskrivarnas) population/tax registers (mantalslängder) from earliest times up to 1820 for Östergotland county along with real estate books (fastighetsböcker) for Malmö city. The real estate books, which began to be introduced in 1875, can include notes well into the 1900’s and are found in the archive “Inskrivningsdomarna I Malmö”. To search for this archive, click on advanced options in the search window and select archive type: court registrar.

Air Crashes (Flyghaverier)  and Defense Readiness (Beredskapsverket)
“Flygstaben: Centralexpeditionen”, a series about air crashes for the period 1934-1949, has been photographed during the last month and much of the material is now available in ArkivDigital.  The remaining volumes will soon be added to the online archive.  You can find the archive, “Flygstaben: Centralexpeditionen” in the military archives.

The Swedish military defense readiness agency’s official military work, “Beredskapsverket” is a comprehensive series describing the military defense readiness program for the years 1937-1945.  ArkivDigital has photographed about 19,000 images from this series and more will be added. You can find these documents in the “Beredskapsverket Avdelning 1” volume in the military archives.

If you want to see exactly what has added to the archive on the volume level, click here. This page is in Swedish.
