ArkivDigital continues to grow!

Annual report

ArkivDigital recently published the annual company report which shows that 2016 was another great year.

Net sales increased by 18 percent to nearly 29 million Swedish kronor. Profits were nearly 5.9 million Swedish kronor, an improvement of nearly 3 million compared with the previous year. More than 8 million new images were added to the online database, this is a record high for the company, as well more than 50 million name register entries. The number of subscribers is nearly 26,000.

These strong financial numbers make it possible for the company to enter new ventures. In 2016, the company acquired several million aerial photos primarily of houses and farm from all over Sweden, most taken from the 1950’s to the beginning of the 2000’s.

Mikael Karlsson, Managing Director of ArkivDigital, writes in the annual report, “It is a wonderful feeling and means so much to make these fascinating photo collections available to many today and at the same preserve them for future generations. I am convinced our customers will share the same feelings. But the material will take some time to digitize so it will take some time before all the images are available in a high-quality format in our online service.”

The company is focused on further improving ArkivDigital, Mikael Karlsson presented a summary of the priorities:

  • Continue digitizing archival documents.
  • Digitizing other types of records, such as older photographs.
  • More name registers, example increase the Population of Sweden 1880-1920 to include 1860 to 1930.
  • Indexes that make searches in the documents easier.
  • Instructions and help texts within the software to facilitate the research, especially for beginners.
  • Smoother payment methods.
  • Increased interaction between ArkivDigital and researchers but also directly between researchers.

The annual shareholders’ meeting will be held on the 19th of May at the company’s headquarters in Lyrestad.

Name Registers in Parish Archives

borasregister

In a previous blog entry, we pointed out name registers (släktnamnsregister) in ArkivDigital for those who research in Göteborg och Bohus, Skaraborg, Älvsborg, Värmland or Västernorrland counties. If one is searching for a person who has a non-patronymic name meaning a name that does not end with a “son” or “dotter”, these registers can be very helpful. Examples of groups of people who had a non-patronymic name were the nobility, priests and not least the many soldiers.

However, you will also find name registers for parish books in some parish archives which also include both patronymic and non-patronymic names. Whenever you research a parish, it is always recommended to browse the archive to see what types of volumes are included in the archive. Occasionally, you will see “register” or “personregister” volumes. For example, if you browse the Borås parish/congregation archive in Älvsborg county, you will see name registers for birth, marriage, death and household records. In this parish, there are name registers for the household records between 1745 and 1860 as shown in the above image. These can be very helpful in the search process.

Below is an example of a page from the household record register book for Borås for the years 1745 – 1754. To the right of the person is the page number where you can find the person in the household record book for the years 1745-1754.

Examples of a few other parish archives where you will find name registers for church books are:

  • Gävle Heliga Trefaldighet – Gävleborg
  • Göteborgs Karl Johan – Göteborg och Bohus
  • Göteborgs Kristine – Göteborg och Bohus
  • Uppsala domkyrkoförsamling – Uppsala

For those who research in Göteborg och Bohus, Skaraborg, Älvsborg, Värmland or Västernorrland counties, we wish to point out name registers (släktnamnsregister) that are accessible on ArkivDigital. If one is searching for a person who has a non-patronymic name meaning a name that does not end with a “son” or “dotter”, these registers can be very helpful. Examples of groups of people who had a non-patronymic name were the nobility, priests and not least the many soldiers.

Above is an image from the name register volume for household records for Dimbo härad in Skaraborg county.  If you were searching for Christina Aminoff shown in the above image, you would find her in the household book for Varv parish in Skaraborg county on page 38 in volume AI:2. To search for a name and then to be directed to the page number in the household record naturally saves much time.

The name registers cover normally the period from the beginning of the church books until the year 1800. For Västernorrland, however, the register continues until 1830 (for Medelpad and norra Ångermanland) and respectively to 1856 (for södra Ångermanland). The type of church books which registers exist vary from place to place.  There are registers for household records, moving in-out records, birth, marriage and death records but this varies from county to county and district (härad) to district as to what type of registers are available for that area.

You can find these registers in ArkivDigital by typing in “Släktnamnsregister” in the search box and click search or you can select “advanced options” and search for registers in the archive type selection.  These registers are divided into six archives, one for each county with the exception for Älvsborg county which has separate archives for Dalsland and Västgötadelen.

Many New Records in ArkivDigital

ProduktkatalogArkivDigital’s online library continues to grow at a fast tempo. There are now about 1,200 volumes or 51 million images of Swedish historical records available. Recent new additions to ArkivDigital include: estate inventories, population/tax registers, military records and other types of records.

Estate Inventories (Bouppteckningar)
Currently, we are focusing much of our time photographing estate inventories beginning in the 1900’s.  The estate inventories for Blekinge county from 1911 to 1920 are now accessible online.  We are currently adding estate inventories for Halland,  Göteborg och Bohus, Skaraborg and Älvsborg counties for the same period and many of these  are now available. Estate inventories for Östergotland county from 1901 to 1910 are also being added.

Population/Tax Registers (Mantalslängder)
The county population/tax registers from the earliest times to the year 1820 for Uppsala county are now available. County population/tax registers for the same period for Västmanland county are being added.  District taxation registers, (häradsskrivarens) or copy of tax/census records, from the earliest times to about the year 1820 are also being added to the online archive. The district taxation registers for Jönköping are now available and photographing is in progress for Kronoberg county.
