ArkivDigital’s Product Catalog and Coverage Table

As of today, ArkivDigital online offers more than 75 million newly photographed color images or over 150 million pages of Swedish historical records.

Have you looked at our product catalog or one-page overview (coverage table) of records within ArkivDigital? The product catalog and coverage table are published both in English and Swedish. These documents are updated monthly.

In the product catalog you get an overview of our digital archive; it lets you take a closer look at what materials we have from specific counties and time periods. You can also see what materials we will be filming within the near future.

The coverage table is a one-page summary of the photographing status of the major collections by county.

Remember this:
The product catalog is meant to give an overview of the material available in ArkivDigital online. Even if a material is listed as finished, there can still be some volumes missing, for example due to books being too damaged to photograph. Furthermore, we also have a large range of materials photographed which are not listed in the product catalog. If we listed every single volume, the catalog would be too extensive.

ArkivDigital acquires millions of aerial photographs

aerobilder-1

ArkivDigital has acquired several million aerial photos from Svenska Aero-Bilder AB. These will now be digitized and added to ArkivDigital’s online archive. These images will complement the church books, estate inventories, military documents, court books and other archival records that currently exist in ArkivDigital.

“Our goal is to continually add new material and create new services for our customers to help them in their research. These images will complement other records in our archives such as the images of the church records.

Through this acquisition, we will have millions of aerial photographs of farms, cottages, villas, petrol stations and much more from the 1950’s to the present day from all over Sweden,”  said the company’s CEO, Mikael Karlsson.

“There is a huge enthusiasm surrounding old pictures. Many people are interested in their past and these images have become a cultural treasure. Several of these houses have been photographed as many as five times over ten-year cycles.

We are extremely pleased  that all these images will now be digitized and preserved for future generations who will have the opportunity to  access these unique photographs via the internet,” said Pereric Öberg, president and owner of Svenska Aero-Bilder AB.

New program software – completely browser-based

Test our new software that is totally browser-based. (Click here for original article in Swedish.) No software download is required. With the new Web version, you can now also test Archive Digital 2.0 on tablet devices, such as the Android and the iPad. It works best with the Google Chrome browser, but it can also run on Safari, Firefox and Edge. Note that it does not work with Internet Explorer.

Remember – it is important to always keep your browser updated. The Web version doesn’t work as well in older browser versions even if the browser is supported by ArkivDigital.

The biggest visible change is that the tabs (now called “Current”), and History are moved to the left side. This change expands the image size so you can see more information at the same time versus having the placement of the tabs above the image. You can adjust the size of the panel to the left, depending on screen size and resolution.

The software is not quite ready for final release so please email your comments and suggestions to kundtjanst@arkivdigital.se.

SCB extracts 1925-1945

The birth, marriage and death extracts from Statistiska centralbyråns (SCB or Bureau of Central Statistics) for the years 1925 to 1945 are now available in ArkivDigital.

The SCB extracts are organized by county and year. This means that we have been able to photograph all parishes through the year 1945. The law of privacy in Sweden prohibits us from photographing some records that are younger than 70 years or for years later than 1945. This also includes church books where the final year in the book is for records later than 1945. Thus if a birth book includes the years 1930 to 1950, we are not allowed to photograph that book because some of the records are protected by the privacy law. In these cases where the original birth, marriage or death books are not available for the years 1925 to 1945, you may wish to look in the SCB extracts.

You will find the SCB extracts in the archive with the long name, Statistiska centralbyrån (SCB) – Avdelningen för befolkningsstatistik 1:a avdelningen. The easiest way to find this archive is to enter “SCB” in the search box and you will be directed to the archive.  Each volume specifies which county and year it covers. If nothing else is mentioned, the volume includes birth, marriage and death records for that year. In other cases there may be an abbreviation specifying the types of records the volume includes. The abbreviations are: fbu (birth records), vbu (marriage records) and dbu (death records).

Each volume consists of many images and therefore can take a few minutes to locate the correct parish. We are well aware of this problem and are working on creating a register for the SCB extracts so that one can select a parish and year and go directly to the image.

The SCB extracts are based on transcriptions sent by each parish to the Bureau of Central Statistics. One should be conscious that these are secondary sources and there could be errors and that these records do not contain all the information that is included in the original church book records.

60 Million Images

arkivdigital

We are excited to announce that ArkivDigital has reached another milestone; 60 million newly photographed color images of old books and other documents are now available in our online digital archive. Since most images include two pages, this means that we now have nearly 120 million photographed pages available for historical research.

While we are extremely pleased and proud that we have reached another milestone, we are not slowing down. Each month we photograph approximately 600, 000 new images and we are focused on our next milestone, 70 million images. We are hoping to reach this goal in about eighteen months.

ArkivDigital’s image milestones:

  • 10 million images, August 2008
  • 20 million images, March 2010
  • 30 million images, September 2011
  • 40 million images, March 2013
  • 50 million images, September 2014

New records in ArkivDigital

Produktkatalog

Our online library has now nearly 54 million images which equates to more than 100 million pages for your Swedish family and historical research. Many new records were added to ArkivDigital during the last month. Below is a summary of the highlights.

Estate Inventories
We continue to focus on photographing the estate inventories (bouppteckningar) for the period from 1901 to 1940. Below is a summary of the new additions.

All estate inventories from 1901 to 1940 for Blekinge and Halland counties are now available. Photographing is in progress for Malmöhus and Kristianstad counties for the years 1931 to 1940. The estate inventories for Stockholm county (except for Stockholm city) are now available up to 1930. Only a few volumes for the period 1931 to 1940 remain to be photographed. We will begin to photograph the estate inventories for the period from 1901 to 1940 for Stockholm city.

Concerning estate inventories, we want to mention some words about Borås city court and magistrate where the records are not preserved at the regional archive but instead at the city archive in Borås. We have been busy in Borås this past winter and early spring photographing and as a result the estate inventories for Borås are now available up to 1960.

Population/tax registers and real estate books
Other materials added during the last month were the district archives (häradsskrivarnas) population/tax registers (mantalslängder) from earliest times up to 1820 for Östergotland county along with real estate books (fastighetsböcker) for Malmö city. The real estate books, which began to be introduced in 1875, can include notes well into the 1900’s and are found in the archive “Inskrivningsdomarna I Malmö”. To search for this archive, click on advanced options in the search window and select archive type: court registrar.

Air Crashes (Flyghaverier)  and Defense Readiness (Beredskapsverket)
“Flygstaben: Centralexpeditionen”, a series about air crashes for the period 1934-1949, has been photographed during the last month and much of the material is now available in ArkivDigital.  The remaining volumes will soon be added to the online archive.  You can find the archive, “Flygstaben: Centralexpeditionen” in the military archives.

The Swedish military defense readiness agency’s official military work, “Beredskapsverket” is a comprehensive series describing the military defense readiness program for the years 1937-1945.  ArkivDigital has photographed about 19,000 images from this series and more will be added. You can find these documents in the “Beredskapsverket Avdelning 1” volume in the military archives.

If you want to see exactly what has added to the archive on the volume level, click here. This page is in Swedish.
