Birth index, Parts of Sweden

Today, we will give an update as to what is available in our index, Birth index, parts of Sweden. This index is a name searchable index for birth records with a partial transcription and a direct link to the original record. The goal is to index all the birth records for Sweden but this will take some time. Below is a summary of the birth records that have been indexed to date.

Recently we have added birth indexes for the years 1800-1840 for the following counties:

  • Gotland
  • Gävleborg
  • Norrbotten
  • Västerbotten
  • Västernorrland
  • Västmanland
  • Älvsborg
  • Örebro

In addition, we have indexed birth records from the earliest times (1600’s) to the second half of the 1800’s and in certain parishes even later for all parishes in the county of Kronoberg, about 80 parishes in Södermanland county as well as certain parishes in Blekinge county, Jönköping county, Kalmar, county, Kristianstad county and Norrbotten county.

Estate Inventory Register available for Skaraborg county

The estate inventories (bouppteckningar) are one of the most important records for genealogists. These records can prove genealogical relationships as well as listing the names of the deceased’s heirs. Also, the estate inventory lists all the assets and debts of the deceased enabling one to get a better understanding of one’s ancestor’s life.

It can take some time to find the correct estate inventory since they are not organized in an exact order. To make it easier to find the correct one, ArkivDigital is working on creating name searchable indexes for the estate inventories.

We have now updated the inventory of estate index with about 200,000 entries for Skaraborg county. If you have ancestors who died in Skaraborg, it is now much easier to find their estate inventory.

The estate inventories from the following district/city courts in Skaraborg are now searchable.

  • Viste häradsrätt 1734-1812
  • Åse häradsrätt 1748-1812
  • Åse och Viste häradsrätt 1812-1859

When you use the inventory of estate index, you can by search by name, the year the estate inventory was created along with the county and parish where the deceased lived.

When you search by year, remember that the estate inventory was not always created in the same year the person died. You may want to search using a time interval, with the start year the year the person died and the end year a couple of years after the deceased’s death date.

Earlier we have added in the inventory of estate index estate inventories from Gotland, Gävleborg, Göteborg and Bohus, Jämtland, Kalma, Kronoberg, Norrbotten, Stockholm, Uppsala, Värmland, Västerbotten, Västernorrland, Älvsborg and Östergotland.

Name Register Review

ArkivDigital’s goal is to make Swedish research quicker and easier. We have added the Population of Sweden 1860-1947, a name searchable index of all the household/congregation books for all of Sweden with a direct link to the original record. We have added searchable name indexes for births, marriages, and death records for parts of Sweden primarily for the county of Kronoberg, many parishes in Södermanland county and a few other parishes with a direct link to the original record. Our goal is to index all the birth, marriage and death records for all of Sweden with links to the original records and this is in progress but will take some time.

Meanwhile, we would like to point out we do have printed name registers for various church books such as marriage name indexes for parishes in Gotland, name registers in some of the large city parishes and other name registers. We have written blogs about these name registers in the past and today we would like to present a summary of these blogs.

Estate Inventory Status Update – February 2019

Next to the church books, the estate inventory records are probably the most important source material for many genealogists. These rich records provide genealogical information as well as detailing the assets and debts of the deceased which helps one gain a deeper understanding of one’s ancestor’s life.

We have photographed all the estate inventory records from earliest times up to 1940 for all of Sweden.  Our goal is to photograph all up until 1960. For some counties, the photographing is complete while work remains for other counties. Below is the photographing status for each county. There may be cases in all counties where individual volumes may be missing for example where the volume could not be photographed because of its extremely poor physical condition.

Search by name in the Swedish historical records!

One common question that one hears from Swedish-Americans new to Swedish records, “Are the records searchable by name?” Today, we can say that increasingly more and more Swedish records such as the church books, estate inventories and other record types are searchable by name.  One of ArkivDigital’s primary goals is to make Swedish research easier and one method is name searchable indexes.

Additions to the estate inventory register

Last summer, ArkivDigital launched a searchable name register for estate inventories, which we discussed in an earlier blog. Go to the earlier blog.

Now, additional name searchable indexes for a large number of estate inventories from the district and city courts in Värmland, Älvsborg along with Göteborgs och Bohus counties have been recently added.

estateinventorygunnarssonSearching in the estate inventory register.

The estate inventory register already included indexes from Gotland, Gävleborg, Jönköping, Kalmar, Kronoberg, Norrbotten, Stockholm, Uppsala, Västerbotten, Västernorrland and Östergötland counties. However, no county is complete and the amount of searchable index entries for each county varies. You can find out what district and city courts and years, the estate inventory register covers by going to this link: https://www.arkivdigital.se/online/register/bouppteckningar. More indexes will be added to the register in the future.

In order to access the estate inventory register, one must have an All-in-one subscription. The register is only available in the web version of our software, which you will find here: https://arkivdigital.net/products/adonline/installation

Digital searchable estate inventory register – now in ArkivDigital

ArkivDigital has now launched a new name searchable register for estate inventories. The building of this register is still in progress but today the register includes estate inventory index entries for Gotland, Jönköping, Kalmar, Kronoberg, Stockholm, Uppsala and Östergötland counties. As the register expands, other counties will be added.

You will find a list of the district courts (härader) and city courts (rådhusrätter) where estate inventories are currently name searchable by going to the following page: https://www.arkivdigital.se/online/register/bouppteckningar

In order to access the estate inventory register, you must have an All-in-one subscription and the register is only accessible in the web version of our program software which you find here: https://app.arkivdigital.se.

Below is an example of searching for the estate inventory for Sven Svensson who died on the 28th of August 1766 in Ljung parish in Östergötland county.

  • Access ArkivDigital.
  • Select new index search.
  • Select index source – Inventory of estate.
  • Enter Sven Svensson and Ljung in the search box. (Note – we could have limited the search to Sven Svensson and received many matches or we could also have added the year 1766 and further limited the number of matches.)
  • Click search.
  • A result list will appear on the right. In this case, there are 10 matches.
  • Select the one for the year 1766.

sven svensson ljung

Below is the result page. Notice all the headings are in English in the English version. The result page shows the following information: first name, last name, occupation, name of the archive, parish, place such as farm or village in the parish, year, and sometimes extra information. In this case the record gives the name of Sven’s wife, Brita Nilsdotter. There is also a link to the original estate inventory record.

Additional Comments

  • In certain cases, only the place (farm, village, etc.) and not the parish name is mentioned in the register. If you cannot find a person, try searching by excluding the parish name in the search criteria.
  • The estate inventory year is the year that it was created. This could happen one or several years after the date of death. In the advanced search, you can search for an interval of years by entering the start and end years for the search.

More modern church books in ArkivDigital

During January and February, we were busy photographing church books whose confidentiality or protection from the law of privacy expired at the end of last year. The volumes included are congregation books, birth and death records with an end year of 1946. In addition, we also photographed moving in and out books and marriage books with the starting year 1946 and year ending no later than 1980.

The photographing for Blekinge, Gotland, Halland, Jämtland, Jönköping, Kopparberg, Kristianstad, Kronoberg, Malmohus, Södermanland, Uppsala, Västmanland, Örebro and Östergötland counties are now complete. Newly photographed images from several other counties are now available online and more will be added in the near future.

1946 death recordÖdestugu (F) F:2 (1917-1946) Image 520 / page 49 (AID: v172844.b520.s49, NAD: SE/VALA/00473)  Link.

You can find more detail as to what volumes are available in ArkivDigital such as the modern church books and other types of volumes on our website, (link to website page).

Finally, we would also like to mention a few words about the birth and baptismal books.  In these books, it is common that notes may be added to a record, for example a note relating to an adoption, often decades after the event. The 70-year privacy law begins from the date of the last inserted note. For example, a note might have been entered in 1956 in a book containing birth records between 1930 and 1946. This means that the book is protected by the privacy law for 70 years after 1956 or it can’t be photographed until 2027.  So in some cases, we currently do not have the opportunity to photograph some of the birth and baptismal books even though they do not contain any birth records for persons born after 1946.

More Tax Registers in ArkivDigital

The population registers (mantalslängderna) or tax registers are one of the key sources for Swedish genealogy.  These records existed as early as the 1640’s long before household records or for that matter many other church records for most parishes. In cases where the church books have been destroyed by fire or other causes, these population registers are a treasure for the researcher.

ArkivDigital earlier (with some exceptions) photographed the two copies of population records preserved at the regional archives, namely the district/city (häradsskrivarnas/ städernas)  and the county (landskontorens) office copies, from the earliest times to 1820.

Unfortunately, there are cases where no population registers were saved at the district/city or county office. Fortunately, a third copy of the population register was created. This copy is stored at the Swedish National Archives (Riksarkivet) and is included in an archive named, Mantalslängder 1642-1820. We are happy to announce that recently we have begun to photograph records from this collection.

From the Swedish National Archives collection, so far we have only completed publishing the oldest registers for the counties of Gotland and Älvsborg but more will be added in the future. However, we wish to clarify that we will not be photographing all the volumes in the archive, Mantalslängder 1642-1820. We will focus on photographing volumes that contain population registers that are missing from the district or county office archives.
alvsborgmantal-recordThe first page in the Älvsborg’s county population register (mantalslängd) for the year 1642 (Swedish National Archives (Riksarkivet) copy). Link.

Unfortunately, the Swedish National Archives collection of population registers is not complete either. For some parishes, all three copies of the population registers were not saved and are not available for certain years. For the period 1719-1765, the archive Riksgäldarkiven Riksens ständers kontor Kammarkontoret, can function as a replacement.

In the county ledger books (länshuvudböckerna), various types of records are included among which are financial accounts but also a variety of personal records. As a replacement for the population records, the salary (lön) and fee payment (betalningsavgiften) records can be helpful. We also want to clarify that we will not be photographing all the books but only the ones that can be used as a replacement for the missing population registers.
