Hands-On ArkivDigital Workshops in “Little Sweden U.S.A”

leslye

ArkivDigital and the McPherson County Old Mill Museum in Lindsborg, Kansas, have a partnership whereby the museum sponsors spring and fall ArkivDigital workshops. The workshop offers participants two days filled with presentations and hands-on training using ArkivDigital.

The 2015 spring workshop will be held the weekend of March 28-29 and the fall workshop will be held on the weekend of September 26-27. We still have a few openings for the spring workshop and registration is open for the fall workshop.

The workshops are a great opportunity to learn how to research your Swedish roots using ArkivDigital. One participant from a past workshop, Leslye from Missouri, summed up the weekend experience by saying, “This weekend was wonderful….personally I learn so much quicker when I can be involved with a hands on approach. I was able to accomplish more in two days than in the past 5 years”.

Lindsborg, Kansas is known as “Little Sweden U.S.A.” because it was settled by Swedish emigrants in 1869 from Värmland. The town is well known for the Svensk Hyllningsfest, and other celebrations promoting its Swedish heritage. The Svensk Hyllningsfest has been held in October of odd-numbered years since 1941.

One of the local attractions is the McPherson County Old Mill Museum with exhibits in 12 buildings showing the lives of early Kansas settlers. One of the buildings is the Swedish Pavilion from the 1904 World’s Fair. The museum archives include many county records not stored at the local courthouse as well as microfilms and scanned images of Kansas Swedish American churches. The museum receives many visitors exploring their Swedish ancestry and requests for Swedish research.

Attend one of these workshops and discover your Swedish roots and explore the Swedish community of Lindsborg.

Kathy Meade gave a presentation on ArkivDigital to a packed room on Friday, February 13th.  There was strong interest and every seat in the presentation room was taken with some persons standing and sitting on the floor.

Presentation BloggTable

ArkivDigital had a booth in the exhibit hall with three workstations and there was a steady stream of visitors every day asking questions about  ArkivDigital and how to use the service, how to find the place where their Swedish ancestor came from in Sweden, requests for reading assistance in reading records and many other Swedish genealogy and research questions.  We wish to give our thanks to the many who stopped by and said, “ArkivDigital is the best for Swedish research”.

Newspaper Clippings from Falkenberg 1899-1965 in ArkivDigital

ArkivDigital’s archive includes many types of historical documents. One interesting collection is a set of newspaper clippings from the Falkenberg Cultural and Local Historical Society (Falkenbergs hembygdsförening). These clippings were collected by a postal worker, Charles Moberg in Falkenberg. This collection includes many news items about events and individuals in Falkenberg.

Four of the volumes are titled, death records. In these volumes, you will find death notices and in many cases a photograph and an obituary of the deceased. Each of the death record volumes includes an indexed name register in the beginning of the book.

The other volumes include clippings about big and small events such as birthdays and events in Falkenberg and the surrounding area. These books also begin with an indexed name register.Falkenbergs hembygdsförening Urklipp14 (1911-1945) Bild 210 - sid 13 (1)

If you have relatives living in Falkenberg during this period, this is a collection you should investigate.

To find these in ArkivDigital, you can enter “Falkenbergs hembygdsförening” in the search box in ArkivDigital or you can click on advanced search and search for archive type “hembygdsförening”.
