Find the correct tax register with our new index!

When the household records and other church books are missing, the tax registers (mantalslängder) become an important source for researchers. To easily find the correct tax register for a particular parish for a certain year has often been up until now a challenge. Since there were three copies of the tax registers, there have been three places to search for these records:

  • Mantalslängder 1642-1820 found in the chamber archive (English version)
  • In the respective county archive along with the respective district court (for parishes in rural areas) or the city courts.
  • kronokamrers, crown treasurer (kronokassörs), census office (mantalskontors), taxation authority (uppbördsverks) or kommunalborgmästares archive (for parishes in the city)

Once the desired volume was found, it was necessary to locate the records for the desired parish, not always the easiest task especially when there is no parish register.

The new index, Table of content censuses, searching for the tax register makes this much easier.

  • Select Index search.
  • Under index source, select Table of content censuses.
  • Enter the desired parish name and year and click search.
  • Click open image for the desired entry in the result list and the first page of the tax register appears.

On February 20, 1904, a fire at the vicarage in Kville destroyed large parts of the church archive. In order to facilitate the research, ArkivDigital has photographed the tax registers for Kville together with the annex parishes even after 1820 (which is usually the end year that we photograph tax registers). In the image above, you see the results list when one searches for the parish Kville for the selected years 1845-1859.

The Table of content censuses consists of nearly 440,000 index entries collected from approximately 9,200 volumes. In order to access the Table of content censuses, one must have an All-in-one subscription.

Additional Table of Content Censuses Search Tips

  • The county information refers to the county that the parish belonged to in the mid 1900’s, Historically, the parish may have belonged to a different county than what is today.
  • The tax registers were usually taken by parish and by city respectively. This also applies in cities with several parishes. Thus, if you are interested in tax register from Jönköping, search for “Jönköpings stad” versus Jönköpings Sofia or Jönköpings Kristina. Stockholm city is however an exception from the rule. Some tax registers were taken for the whole city and while others by parish. There search for both the city of Stockholm and the name of the parish in question. For Göteborg the tax registers ae organized by parish from 1833 forward but for previous years search for the city of Göteborg.
  • Sometimes there were separate tax registers for market towns (köpingar), municipalities along with mills, mines and similar institutions. If there is a separate tax register for a mill for example, distinct from the regular parish tax register, we have created a separate index entry which includes both the parish and the mill’s name (brukets namn) for example “Njutånger: Iggesunds bruk”. If the mill is included as part of the parish’s tax register, there is usually no separate index for the mill.

Tips for finding an estate inventory register in an estate inventory volume

We have previously written an English blog (see previous blog entry) about the estate inventories (bouppteckningar) and how one can search these records in ArkivDigital. We mentioned that many estate inventories have been indexed by name and these indexes are in volumes named, estate inventory registers (bouppteckningsregister).

However, not all estate inventories have been indexed. In those cases, one needs to browse page by page in the estate inventory volume.  But you still may be lucky.

Some estate inventory volumes contain a name index in the front of the book.  This is the case with the estate inventory volume FII:18 found in the Orust and Tjörns häradsrätt archive. In this volume, you will find a number of name registers and there is a register for each court (ting) session that the volume covers.

In volume FII:19 for the same district court (häradsrätt), there is one name register for all the court sessions that the volume covers. The register is on page 1 with the following heading:

”Register öfver bouppteckningar, som inregistrerats vid Orusts och Tjörns häradsrätt under åren 1854-1856 efter följande aflidna personer”.

Register of estate inventories, which were registered at Orust and Tjörn district court during the years 1854-1856 for the following deceased persons.

The register notes the name of the person that the estate inventory refers to along with a reference number for the actual estate inventory.

In both of these examples, we have added information about these registers in the “Archive Info” box that you will find above the list showing the archive volumes.

We wish to thank Lisbeth Zachs for giving us this tip about the registers in the estate inventory volumes for Orust and Tjörn district court (häradsrätt).

New records in ArkivDigital

Produktkatalog
Our online library has over 54 million images which equates to more than 108 million pages of Swedish historical records. Many new records were added to ArkivDigital during the last month. Below is a summary of the highlights:

During May, we continued to focus on photographing the estate inventories (bouppteckningar) for the period 1901 to 1940. We have begun the massive project of photographing Stockholm city estate inventories for this period and the records up to 1905 are now available. The estate inventories for the rest of Stockholm county up to 1940 are now available in ArkivDigital.

In addition, estate inventories have been added for other counties. We want to especially mention that Kopparberg as well as Göteborg och Bohus counties are complete up to 1920 and that the records for Värmland county up to 1930 are now available.

Recently court books for the following areas have been added to the digital library: Arvidsjaurs tingslags häradsrätt (district court), Bjärke häradsrätt (district court), Edsbergs häradsrätt (district court), Edsbergs häradsrätt (district court), Gotlands norra häradsrätt (district court), Norrtälje rådhusrätt och magistrat (district court) along with Ölands södra mots häradsrätt (district court).
