Military Service Cards (Stamkort) Search Index

The digitized conscription service cards (stamkort) for Swedish men who enrolled in the military from 1902 to 1941 were previously published in ArkivDigital and have been available for some time. Up until now, it has taken some time and effort to find the military service card for a desired person. There are nearly two million cards and these are spread out in a large number of archives which in turn used different methods for organizing the cards.

The military service card includes the name of the conscript, birth date, birth place and enrollment number. Additional information included in the service card are the branch of the service the recruit served in, service time (including basic and additional military training as well as emergency preparation service during World War II), promotions, record of punishments if any and even sometimes the conscript’s home address and civil occupation.

The draft registration age changed in 1914 from age 21 years to 20, which means that the military service cards that are online cover men born approximately between the years 1881 to 1921.

Now, these military service cards have been indexed by name in ArkivDigital making it simple to find the desired card.  Select new index search and then select the military service cards index. Fill in the name and or birth information, select the desired post in the result list and click on the link which opens the image of the military service card. How much simpler can it be!

The above record shows a search for Karl Sigvard Gustavsson born on the 2nd of December 1912 in the parish of Horn, resulting in the above index record. Click on the link and you will see the image of the military service card. On the card, you will find notes about his military service from his enrollment in 1932 to his discharge in 1959.

To access the military service cards index, one must have an All-in-one subscription and the register is only available in our web version of our software. You can find our web version by going to: https://app.arkivdigital.se.

Using the Population of Sweden 1860-1930 to discover where Hilda moved to!

Within the household and congregation records, there is an entry showing where a person moved to if the person moved during the period the household/congregation books cover.  The information that is normally shown is the place and a date or sometimes there is a reference to another page number and date within the same household book.  However, many times the minister will note an abbreviation that is not easily understood and one must take some time to discover where the person has moved. In the image below, it states that Hilda Joseph. (Josephina). Hjorth born on the 20th of May 1833 moved from Önumstorp in Önum parish in Skaraborg county to V. 41 in 1871.  What does “V. 41” mean?

onum hflÖnum (R) AI:9 (1867-1881) Image 148 / page 142 (AID: v12796.b148.s142, NAD: SE/GLA/13674) Link.

There are two methods for discovering what “V. 41″ means: using traditional methods of deciphering the meaning or using the Population of Sweden 1860-1930.

Now, while the reference to a page number is not usually the letter V, one might go to page 41 in the same household book to see if she is listed there and if one goes there, Hilda will not be found.

The next step is to determine if the parish, Önum, belongs to a pastorat. See previous blog for more information about a pastorat.

You can check if Önum belongs to a pastorat by accessing ArkivDigital, selecting new archive search, entering Önum in the search box and search. Open the archive for Önum parish and click on the archive info tab. There you will get information about what pastorat Önum belongs to. See the image below.

onum archive info

You will note the following information in the archive info box: Före den 1 maj 1920 var Önum annexförsamling i Skarstads, Hällums, Vara och Önums pastorat or before the 1st of May 1920, Önum was an annex parish in the Skarstads, Hällums, Vara and Önums pastorat.

This information gives us a clue that “V”. might mean Vara and 41 the page number in the Vara household book that includes the year 1871. Our next step is go to archive search and, enter Vara in the search box and click search.

vara search

Search for a household book that includes the year 1871 which is AI:7 that covers the years 1867-1878 and open the volume and go to page 41.

varahfl41Vara (R) AI:7 (1867-1878) Image 46 / page 41 (AID: v12751.b46.s41, NAD: SE/GLA/13611) Link.

In the above image you will see a reference that Hilda has moved in from “Ö 142” or Önum parish on page 142. In this case, the minister is abbreviating Önum. This minister often abbreviates the parish names of parishes within the pastorat by showing only the first letter of the parish name.

Search using the Population of Sweden 1860 to 1930 Search Index
The Population of Sweden 1860-1930 index makes Swedish research so much easier. For this same case, we can go to New index search, select the Population of Sweden 1860 to 1930 index, enter Hilda and her birth date 18330520 in the search box, and click search. We receive 7 matches that we can analyze. (There are other ways of searching such as using the advanced search method or using various search criteria,) We see one household record is in Vara. We can quickly link on the match and then link on the image to verify the information. Thus, we quickly know that “V. 41” means Vara page 41. Of course, we have to verify that all the information agrees and this is right Hilda. This one is correct.

This is an example how Swedish research is becoming much easier and quicker using the Population of Sweden 1860-1930 index.

2017 – Another good year for ArkivDigital!

2017 was another good year for ArkivDigital as shown in the recently published annual report. Net sales increased by over 16 percent to nearly 33 million Swedish kronor. Nearly 10 million new images were added to the online archive during the year, which is a record high in the company’s history, as well as approximately 25 million name-register entries were added. The number of subscribers at year-end was close to 26,000.

AD-2017

Mikael Karlsson, Managing Director since 2012, expressed his pleasure regarding the good results. “In five years, the company’s net sales have nearly doubled, and operating profits have increased nearly fivefold. Naturally, we are happy with what we have achieved but we have much higher goals.”

Mikael Karlsson summarized the continuing priorities for the company:

  • Continued digitization of archive documents and other sources.
  • More name registers and other types of indexes that make it easier to search in the archives.
  • Instructions and help texts within the software to ease research, especially for beginners.
  • A family tree that allows one not only to retrieve information from ArkivDigital but to organize and structure the data.
  • Smoother payment methods.
  • Increased interaction between ArkivDigital and researchers but also directly between researchers.

“In short, ArchivDigital will be better in all areas,” stated Mikael Karlsson.

The annual shareholders’ meeting will be held on May 22 at the company’s headquarters in Lyrestad. The board is proposing a dividend of 52 öre per share.

Additions to the estate inventory register

Last summer, ArkivDigital launched a searchable name register for estate inventories, which we discussed in an earlier blog. Go to the earlier blog.

Now, additional name searchable indexes for a large number of estate inventories from the district and city courts in Värmland, Älvsborg along with Göteborgs och Bohus counties have been recently added.

estateinventorygunnarssonSearching in the estate inventory register.

The estate inventory register already included indexes from Gotland, Gävleborg, Jönköping, Kalmar, Kronoberg, Norrbotten, Stockholm, Uppsala, Västerbotten, Västernorrland and Östergötland counties. However, no county is complete and the amount of searchable index entries for each county varies. You can find out what district and city courts and years, the estate inventory register covers by going to this link: https://www.arkivdigital.se/online/register/bouppteckningar. More indexes will be added to the register in the future.

In order to access the estate inventory register, one must have an All-in-one subscription. The register is only available in the web version of our software, which you will find here: https://arkivdigital.net/products/adonline/installation

Swedish National Archives tax records – status update

A few months ago, we published a blog about the types of tax registers that are available in ArkivDigital. Go to previous blog. As stated in the blog post, three copies of the tax registers were created. Unfortunately, the preservation of these different copies is uneven. Often, one will find that only one or two of the copies have been preserved; if one is really unlucky, none of them.

Earlier, we have photographed the two copies which are preserved at the regional archives from the oldest times to 1820. We have also been photographing the third copy which is preserved at the National Archives in Stockholm (Riksarkivet i Stockholm). We are currently doing complementary photographing which means that we are only photographing volumes where no corresponding copies exist in the regional archives.

Below is a status listing the tax registers from the National Archives we have photographed or are in the progress of photographing. The focus has been to photograph the counties with the biggest gaps in the regional archives.

  • Completed counties
    Blekinge
    Göteborgs och Bohus
    Kronoberg
    Malmöhus
    Södermanland
    Västerbotten
    Älvsborg
  • In Progress
    Kopparberg

To find these records in ArkivDigital:

  • Go to New Archive Search
  • Enter Mantalslängder 1642-1820 in the search box
  • You will see a list of the archives (one per county)

New aerial photograph archive in ArkivDigital – AB Stockholms Aero

We have now published another aerial photo archive in ArkivDigital, AB Stockholms Aero / Bromma Flygbild.

Flygbild1196883-beskärd-1024x788Image is from Högsätersleden in Värmland

AB Stockholms Aero, also known as ASA Airlines, was a player in the Swedish air industry from 1950 to 1965. They operated flight schools in several locations throughout Sweden, engaged in aerial photography and also were involved in the sale of Auster aircraft.

When the company went bankrupt in 1965, the aerial photographs were purchased by Bromma Flygbild. This company existed between 1965-1970. As far as we know Bromma Flygbild was not engaged in aerial photographing but only in the sale of images from AB Stockholms Aero.

In order to view the aerial photographs, an All-in-One subscription is required and one must use ArkivDigital’s web version.

You can read more about our aerial photographs in a blog that was published earlier. Click here to read the previous blog.
