Now 52 Volumes – Svenska Gods och Gårdar (Swedish estates and farms)

Last November, we published a blog about the books, Svenska Gods och Gårdar, in ArkivDigital. (Click here to read original blog in English or Click here for Swedish.). These are a series of books published during the 1930s and 1940s describing many estates and farms throughout Sweden. The books include information about the farm owner and family, history and size of the farm, livestock and even a picture of the farm. In November, only 21 volumes were available in ArkivDigital. Today, you will find 52 volumes the Svenska Gods och Gårdar archive in ArkivDigital.

Below is an image for the farm in Nyed parish in Värmland county. The owner is Olof Fredr. Ottosson born March 14, 1869 and the son of Otto Jonsson and his wife Maria. He married in 1895 to Kristina Johannesdotter in 1895 who died in 1925. Otto and Kristina had the following children: Elin born 1896, Hildur born 1899, Ivar born 1905 and Kristina born 1912.

Military Rolls (rullor) 1620-1723 now complete

A few years ago, we wrote a blog about the photographing of the Rullor 1620-1723. At that time, we had photographed the documents for the years 1620–1659. We have now photographed the rolls up to and including the year 1723.

military rolls 1620An example from the Rullor 1620-1723. Rullor 1620-1723 1720:4 (1712-1720) Image 90 (AID: v752417.b90, NAD: SE/KrA/0022)

The Rullor 1620-1723 are earlier military records to the general muster rolls and contain about 550,000 images and about 1800 volumes. Most genealogists sooner or later find an ancestor who served in the Swedish military and can benefit from these records that show the military units mustered year by year. The general muster rolls began to be introduced in the middle of the 1680s and so therefore up until the year 1723, the Rullor 1620-1723 are a complement to the general muster rolls.

You can find these records by:

  • Log in at app.arkivdigital.se
  • Select Archive search.
  • Enter Rullor 1620-1723 in the box under Archive holder.

If you want more tips on how to search in the Rullor 1620-1723, click here to read an earlier blog about these records.

Use the filter feature to quickly find a volume

Earlier this year, we published a blog on how to quickly find a volume within an archive using the filter feature. (See earlier blog.) This is a very helpful tool especially when you are searching in an archive with many volumes.

To illustrate this feature, we will look for an 1801 death book in Sankta Katarina or Katarina parish in Stockholm city.

Our first step is to search for the Sankta Katarina parish archive.

  • Go to Archive search.
  • Enter Sankta Katarina in the search box under Archive holder
  • Open the archive

search for katarina

When you open the archive, you will see that there are 767 volumes for the parish. You can now use the filter function versus scrolling through the volume list to quickly find the volume.

katarina volume list

You can then filter by type of source and year.

katarina filter

By selecting the source, death and burial records, and entering 1801 in the from and to year fields, we have narrowed the volume list to one volume.

Herdaminne – Personal History of Ministers

There are many types of records within ArkivDigital. One interesting set of records is the herdaminne. The herdaminne is a personal history of clergy who served in the Swedish church since the middle ages. In most cases, you can find a very detailed biography, including the person’s full name, date of birth, place of birth, family members, status, and other biographical notations. Sometimes, you will even find photographs. If you have an ancestor who was a member of the Swedish clergy, these records can be a valuable tool for researching your ancestor.

The herdaminnen are published books that were mostly published between the late 1800’s and present date for all the dioceses within Sweden. In order to find a herdaminne for a particular member of the clergy, you need to know the name of the parish he served in and the name of the diocese (stift) that the parish belonged to. There were some changes in the organizational structure so one needs to verify the diocese the parish belonged to for the designated time period.

Within ArkivDigital, you will find herdaminnen for the following dioceses: four in Sweden and one in Finland.

  • Göteborg
  • Skara
  • Uppsala
  • Växjö
  • Åbo (Finland)

You can find these by selecting archive search and then selecting archive type, printed literature. Select country, Sweden, for the herdaminnen in Sweden and select the country, Finland, for the one in Finland.

Below is an example of a biographical sketch plus a photo for the minister, Peter Magnus Bergström, who was born in Algutsboden on the 14th of January 1811.

View list of Swedish parishes in web version!

One comment that we have heard several times at recent conferences is “I can’t see a list of all the parishes in Sweden in ArkivDigital’s web version”. In order to see the list of  parishes in the web version, one must do the following:

parish searchListing of 2,859 parishes within Sweden

You will see a listing of 2,859 parishes. The parishes are listed in alphabetical order. Remember that there are three additional letters in the Swedish alphabet: Å, Ä, Ö. These letters are at the end of the alphabet.

You can further limit your search by county or province. Make sure the country selected is Sweden. Sweden is the default country. Under Swedish county, you can select a desired county and then only the parishes for that county will be selected. In the example below, the county of Kalmar was selected. Now only the 127 parishes for Kalmar are shown.

Swedish Portraits (Svenska Porträttgalleri)

ArkivDigital’s online library includes many types of records such as the church books, estate inventories, court records, tax registers and military records. But there are many additional types of records within ArkivDigital including scanned books. One interesting set is the Svenskt Porträttgalleri.

The Svenskt Porträttgalleri includes 26 volumes of portraits and biographical data for over 20,000 persons who represented key segments of Swedish life including clergy, military officers, academics, doctors, publishers, financiers, and others. The series includes a general register or an index which lists all the individuals in alphabetical order and points to the volume that shows the photograph and biography. You can find these volumes in ArkivDigital by going to archive search and selecting archive type, printed litterature.

As an example, we will look for Gustaf Unonius, who was the founder of St. Ansgarius Church established in 1849 in Chicago, Illinois. This was the first Scandinavian church in Chicago. To find the biographical data for Gustav Unonius in the Svenskt Porträttgalleri, do the following:

  • Access ArkivDigital (app.arkivdigital.se).
  • Select archive search.
  • Select archive type – printed litterature.
  • Select the archive – Svenskt Porträttgalleri.
  • Open the general register volume. The names are listed in alphabetical order.
  • Below is the register entry.

unonius registerSvenskt porträttgalleri (o) Generalregister (1913) Image 3900 / Page 765 (AID: v903628.b3900.s765)

The information in the register is an abbreviated biographical sketch along with pointing out where we can find his portrait and a more detailed biography in Volume 15 (XV). The information shown in the register is the following:

Unonius, Gustaf Elias Marius was born in Helsingfors (Helsinki, Finland) on the 25th of August 1810. He was a pastor at an Anglo-American church, a customs collector in Grisslehamn and died in Hacksta parish in Uppsala county on the 14th of October 1902.

The next step is to go to Volume XV. You will see that Volume XV and XVI are in the same volume in ArkivDigital. The names are listed in alphabetical order for each volume. Browse through the book to search for Gustaf Unonius. Below is his photograph and a more detailed biographical sketch.

gustaf unonius full biographySvenskt porträttgalleri (o) XV-XVI (1897-1900) Image 990 / Page 181 (AID: v903622.b990.s181)

In the above record, you will find a few more details about Gustaf Elias Marius Unonius’s life. Additional information in this record includes that he studied in Uppsala, emigrated to America in 1841, studied at an Anglo-American seminary in Wisconsin in 1843, ordained to the priesthood in 1845, was a pastor at the Swedish-Norwegian parish, St. Ansgarius in Chicago in 1849 and still a priest in the Anglo-American church and returned to Sweden in 1858. In 1860, for his work with the Swedish immigrants in America he was given a reward of 3,000 riksdaler. He worked as a customs official in Grisslehamn from 1863 to 1888. The last portion of the sketch list some of his publications and probably the best known being Minnen fr. en Sjuttonåring vistelse in nordvestra Amerika or Memoir for a Seventeen-Year Stay i Northwest America. This work has been translated into English with the title of A Pioneer in Northwest America 1841-1858, The Memoirs of Gustaf Unonius.

The Svenskt Porträttgalleri is a wonderful source for finding photographs and some biographical information about persons active in Swedish society.

Happy New Year!

fireworks-3653379_1920A little glance backwards at the year 2018
Here are some of the years´s highlights!

Interactive map for aerial photographs
Recently, we launched an interactive map that makes it much simpler to search for aerial photographs. This is a first step to adding mapping functionality as another powerful tool in our service.

Swedish-American church books
In addition to Swedish documents, we have also photographed church books in the United States. In 2018, most of the additions were for the state of Iowa but also for Nebraska, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

80 million images in ArkivDigital
We are now the largest provider of Swedish historical documents on the net. We are even larger than the Swedish National Archives who only have 65 million images on their online site.

Population of Sweden 1860-1947
Seventeen new years, 17 million posts (1930-1947) have been added during 2018, and the index now contains the years 1860-1947.
The Population of Sweden is by far the biggest searchable index in Sweden, it contains about 105 million name entries from 37,597 books.

Sweden’s estate inventory register
During the year, ArkivDigital’s searchable estate inventory register grew and we continue to add entries to the register. We will not quit until every estate inventory is searchable by name.

High resolution images of your ancestor’s family farm
Many have discovered our service where one can purchase high resolution photographs of family farms or other buildings. When one purchases a photograph, ArkivDigital will also publish all the other photos in the series and these will be published online and available to all subscribers. This is very similar to our process of ordering court book records.

Our software is now web based
During the year we have further developed and improved our software, mainly “under the hood” in order to increase our speed in developing new features and functionality that will be noticed in the coming years.

ArkivDigital was the head sponsor for Genealogy Days in Växjö in August 2018
Again, we will be the head sponsor for Genealogy Days in Borås in 2019.  Släktforskardagarna i Borås 2019

North America’s largest genealogy conference, RootsTech
We participated in RootsTech this year and will again participate in February 2019.

75,000 Customer corrections have been completed
Thank you! You have corrected 75,000 index entries this year. Continue to send corrections of errors that you discover. We are probably one of the few companies that wants to receive as many “bug reports” as possible.

Population of Sweden 1975
A few years ago, ArkivDigital launched two large searchable name registers which cover the entire Swedish population for the years 1950 and 1960. This year we have gone forward in time and launched a register for Sweden’s population for 1975.

Population of Sweden 1985
Now you can find relatives in the 1980’s. Shortly after we launched the Population of Sweden 1975, we went forward in time and launched a register for Sweden’s population in 1985.

Population of Sweden 1940
The Population of Sweden 1940 is now searchable in ArkivDigital! With a couple of clicks and searches, one can find information about approximately 6.3 million Swedes who lived in Sweden on the 31st of December 1940.

Birth, narriage and death indexes
Thanks to our partnerships with several genealogical societies and private individuals, we now have indexed by name about three million birth, marriage and death records. We welcome more partnerships, so please don’t hesitate to contact us.

The House of Nobility (Riddarhuset)
In the autumn, we have formed a partnership with The House of Nobility (Riddarhuset) to photograph historical documents.
The House of Nobility is an important Swedish historical source. It is a palace and an organization for Swedish nobility. The organization’s purpose is to preserve and maintain historical heritage by:

  • Preserving and publishing genealogies of noble families
  • Managing over 300 foundations
  • Maintaining and preserving the palace

The House of Nobility was founded more than 400 years ago and is organization that lists and documents the history of all Swedish noble families. It is a unique institution and not comparable to any modern organization. You can search for these historical documents of the Swedish nobility in ArkivDigital by going to Archive search and enter “Riddarhuset” in the search box.

150 million register posts
We now have 150 million register posts or 150 million entries searchable by name. 61 million new posts were added this year. No other organization has a larger number of searchable name indexes for Swedish historical records. The Swedish National Archive has just over 30 million published register posts.

A big thank you to all our wonderful customers for a fantastic 2018, and now we go forward to an exciting 2019!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
