Estate Inventory Register available for Skaraborg county

The estate inventories (bouppteckningar) are one of the most important records for genealogists. These records can prove genealogical relationships as well as listing the names of the deceased’s heirs. Also, the estate inventory lists all the assets and debts of the deceased enabling one to get a better understanding of one’s ancestor’s life.

It can take some time to find the correct estate inventory since they are not organized in an exact order. To make it easier to find the correct one, ArkivDigital is working on creating name searchable indexes for the estate inventories.

We have now updated the inventory of estate index with about 200,000 entries for Skaraborg county. If you have ancestors who died in Skaraborg, it is now much easier to find their estate inventory.

The estate inventories from the following district/city courts in Skaraborg are now searchable.

  • Barne häradsrätt 1743-1859
  • Binnebergs häradsrätt 1737-1860
  • Dimbo häradsrätt 1743-1838
  • Falköpings rådhusrätt och magistrat 1807-1852
  • Gudhems häradsrätt 1737-1860
  • Hasslerörs häradsrätt 1719-1870

  • Viste häradsrätt 1734-1812
  • Åse häradsrätt 1748-1812
  • Åse och Viste häradsrätt 1812-1859

When you use the inventory of estate index, you can by search by name, the year the estate inventory was created along with the county and parish where the deceased lived.

When you search by year, remember that the estate inventory was not always created in the same year the person died. You may want to search using a time interval, with the start year the year the person died and the end year a couple of years after the deceased’s death date.

Earlier we have added in the inventory of estate index estate inventories from Gotland, Gävleborg, Göteborg and Bohus, Jämtland, Kalma, Kronoberg, Norrbotten, Stockholm, Uppsala, Värmland, Västerbotten, Västernorrland, Älvsborg and Östergotland.

Searching now easier for births in Västmanland, Älvsborg and Örebro counties 1800-1840!

It has become much easier to find information about persons born in Västmanland, Älvsborg and Örebro counties. We have updated our index, Birth index, parts of Sweden, with approximately 522,000 entries from these three counties. The updating is for the years 1800 to 1840.

Instead of paging through the church books looking for a birth notice, you can now quickly find the person with the help of a simple search for example by name and birth date. Then you can click to the original record in order to double check the information in the birth book.

You will find the following information in the index record:

  • Birth date
  • Baptismal date
  • Child’s given name
  • Birth place (village, farm, etc.)
  • Birth parish
  • Parents’ names, title/occupation and age

The update of the index is a result of transcripts that have been produced for the parish birth books for the respective counties and years.

There are now approximately 2 million index entries for the index, Birth index, parts of Sweden. We are continuing to update this index with more counties and will post the updates in future blogs.

Estate Inventory Status Update – February 2019

Next to the church books, the estate inventory records are probably the most important source material for many genealogists. These rich records provide genealogical information as well as detailing the assets and debts of the deceased which helps one gain a deeper understanding of one’s ancestor’s life.

We have photographed all the estate inventory records from earliest times up to 1940 for all of Sweden.  Our goal is to photograph all up until 1960. For some counties, the photographing is complete while work remains for other counties. Below is the photographing status for each county. There may be cases in all counties where individual volumes may be missing for example where the volume could not be photographed because of its extremely poor physical condition.

Over 100 million register posts!

ArkivDigital has now reached another milestone: over 100 million register posts are now searchable! Since the beginning of the year, 13 million register posts have been added which means that the number of register posts has increased from 88 million to 101 million.

Register posts have been added to the following search indexes:

  • The Population of Sweden 1860-1920 has been expanded to include the years 1921 to 1930 and thus the name of the index has been changed to the Population of Sweden 1860 – 1930. See earlier blog.
  • The inventory of estate index additions includes posts for Göteborg-och-Bohus, Värmland, and Älvsborg counties. See earlier blog.
  • The birth, marriage and death indexes addition include posts from Nyköping and the surrounding areas. See earlier blog.

Additions to the estate inventory register

Last summer, ArkivDigital launched a searchable name register for estate inventories, which we discussed in an earlier blog. Go to the earlier blog.

Now, additional name searchable indexes for a large number of estate inventories from the district and city courts in Värmland, Älvsborg along with Göteborgs och Bohus counties have been recently added.

estateinventorygunnarssonSearching in the estate inventory register.

The estate inventory register already included indexes from Gotland, Gävleborg, Jönköping, Kalmar, Kronoberg, Norrbotten, Stockholm, Uppsala, Västerbotten, Västernorrland and Östergötland counties. However, no county is complete and the amount of searchable index entries for each county varies. You can find out what district and city courts and years, the estate inventory register covers by going to this link: https://www.arkivdigital.se/online/register/bouppteckningar. More indexes will be added to the register in the future.

In order to access the estate inventory register, one must have an All-in-one subscription. The register is only available in the web version of our software, which you will find here: https://arkivdigital.net/products/adonline/installation

Swedish National Archives tax records – status update

A few months ago, we published a blog about the types of tax registers that are available in ArkivDigital. Go to previous blog. As stated in the blog post, three copies of the tax registers were created. Unfortunately, the preservation of these different copies is uneven. Often, one will find that only one or two of the copies have been preserved; if one is really unlucky, none of them.

Earlier, we have photographed the two copies which are preserved at the regional archives from the oldest times to 1820. We have also been photographing the third copy which is preserved at the National Archives in Stockholm (Riksarkivet i Stockholm). We are currently doing complementary photographing which means that we are only photographing volumes where no corresponding copies exist in the regional archives.

Below is a status listing the tax registers from the National Archives we have photographed or are in the progress of photographing. The focus has been to photograph the counties with the biggest gaps in the regional archives.

  • Completed counties
    Blekinge
    Göteborgs och Bohus
    Kronoberg
    Malmöhus
    Södermanland
    Västerbotten
    Älvsborg
  • In Progress
    Kopparberg

To find these records in ArkivDigital:

  • Go to New Archive Search
  • Enter Mantalslängder 1642-1820 in the search box
  • You will see a list of the archives (one per county)

Summary of new records added in 2017

Over 3,000 newly photographed volumes have been added to our online digital archive since the beginning of the year. We want to take this opportunity to summarize the most important additions. To find out what is available in our online library, click here.

1946 death recordÖdestugu (F) F:2 (1917-1946) Image 520 / page 49 (AID: v172844.b520.s49, NAD: SE/VALA/00473)

Modern church books – For most counties, we have had added the church books whose confidentiality or protection from the privacy laws expired at the end of last year. These include birth, death and congregation books up to 1946 with the exception of books that may contain retroactively introduced sensitive data. (This is especially common in birth books.) In addition, we have added moving in/out books and marriage records up to the year 1980.

SCB extracts for 1946 – Because of the privacy laws, we seldom are able to publish all the birth, marriage and death books up to 1946. If the original book is not available, the SCB extracts are a good replacement. In the beginning of March, we added the SCB extracts for 1946. Earlier we published the extracts for the years 1925 through 1945. You will find the SCB extracts in the archive: Statistiska centralbyrån (SCB) – Avdelningen för befolkningsstatistik 1:a avdelningen. The easiest way to search for the SCB extracts is to select archive search and enter “SCB” in the search box.

Estate inventories - Currently, we are photographing estate inventories for the period 1931 to 1960. The progress varies between counties. If you want to know what is available for a particular county, go to this page https://www.arkivdigital.net/volume. On the right side of the page, select the county that you interested in and there you will find a summary of what is available for that county.

National Archives tax register copies – We have earlier (with some exceptions) photographed the two copies of the tax registers which are preserved at the regional archives, namely the häradsskrivarnas(städernas) or the district (city) copies and the county office examples from the earliest times up to and including the year 1820.

Unfortunately, it is not unusual that there are missing tax register copies both for the district/city and county. Fortunately, there was a third copy stored at the National Archives which is in a collection named, Mantalslängder 1642-1820 or Tax Registers 1642-1820. We are currently photographing volumes from this collection to cover gaps in our records. To date, we have primarily published the tax register for Älvsborg county. The tax registers for Älvsborg county have been a blank spot on the map for us because the county office copies are completely missing prior to 1835 because they were destroyed by the Vänersborg city fire in 1834. Only sporadic copies of the district/city tax registers were preserved.

Seamen houses – Documents from many of the seamen houses have been available in ArkivDigital for a long period. But the Norrland seamen houses have been completely missing but this is beginning to change. We have begun to add documents for the seaman house in Haparanda and more documents for other seaman houses in Norrland will be added in the future.

All of us at ArkivDigital wish you a lovely Easter with lots of good food and the pleasant company of loved ones. Happy Easter!

More Tax Registers in ArkivDigital

The population registers (mantalslängderna) or tax registers are one of the key sources for Swedish genealogy.  These records existed as early as the 1640’s long before household records or for that matter many other church records for most parishes. In cases where the church books have been destroyed by fire or other causes, these population registers are a treasure for the researcher.

ArkivDigital earlier (with some exceptions) photographed the two copies of population records preserved at the regional archives, namely the district/city (häradsskrivarnas/ städernas)  and the county (landskontorens) office copies, from the earliest times to 1820.

Unfortunately, there are cases where no population registers were saved at the district/city or county office. Fortunately, a third copy of the population register was created. This copy is stored at the Swedish National Archives (Riksarkivet) and is included in an archive named, Mantalslängder 1642-1820. We are happy to announce that recently we have begun to photograph records from this collection.

From the Swedish National Archives collection, so far we have only completed publishing the oldest registers for the counties of Gotland and Älvsborg but more will be added in the future. However, we wish to clarify that we will not be photographing all the volumes in the archive, Mantalslängder 1642-1820. We will focus on photographing volumes that contain population registers that are missing from the district or county office archives.
alvsborgmantal-recordThe first page in the Älvsborg’s county population register (mantalslängd) for the year 1642 (Swedish National Archives (Riksarkivet) copy). Link.

Unfortunately, the Swedish National Archives collection of population registers is not complete either. For some parishes, all three copies of the population registers were not saved and are not available for certain years. For the period 1719-1765, the archive Riksgäldarkiven Riksens ständers kontor Kammarkontoret, can function as a replacement.

In the county ledger books (länshuvudböckerna), various types of records are included among which are financial accounts but also a variety of personal records. As a replacement for the population records, the salary (lön) and fee payment (betalningsavgiften) records can be helpful. We also want to clarify that we will not be photographing all the books but only the ones that can be used as a replacement for the missing population registers.

Estate Inventories (Bouppteckningar) 1901-1960 – Status update

ArkivDigital has been photographing estate inventory records for the period, 1901 to 1960 for a while. We have mentioned this activity several times in our blogs, the last one was about a year ago: see previous blog. We have photographed much more since then and thought it was a good time to give a status update.

Our photographing progress varies between counties. Below is a status by county of what records are complete followed by a summary of the records we are currently photographing. Our goal is to photograph estate inventories up to and including the year 1960.  But in Gotland, we have been successful in photographing some later records. For all counties, single volumes may be missing in cases where they were in such poor physical condition that they could not be photographed.

Estate inventories are available in ArkivDigital up to the year noted:

1920: Jönköping, Kalmar, Östergötland
1930: Kopparberg, Kronoberg, Norrbotten, Södermanland, Uppsala, Västerbotten, Västernorrland, Västmanland, Örebro
1940: Gävleborg, Jämtland*, Stockholm
1945: Göteborg och Bohus, Skaraborg, Älvsborg
1950: Värmland
1960: Blekinge, Halland, Kristianstad, Malmöhus
1980: Gotland, (Visby city court 1945-1961 missing)

Photographing is in progress for the following:

1921-1930: Jönköping, Kalmar, Östergötland.
1931-1940: Kopparberg, Norrbotten, Södermanland, Uppsala, Västerbotten, Västernorrland, Västmanland, Örebro
1941-1945: Stockholm
1946-1950: Göteborg och Bohus, Skaraborg, Älvsborg
1951-1955: Värmland

*For Jämtland county, there are some estate inventories missing for the period 1861-1900. But currently photographing is in progress for these records. For the rest of Sweden, the estate inventories from earliest time to the year 1900 are available in ArkivDigital and have been for some time.

During the 1900’s, more estate inventories were typewritten. In the above image, which is from the Eksjö rådhusrätt och magistrats collection of estate inventories from the year 1926, we see the end or last page of a typewritten estate inventory and the beginning page of a handwritten one.

Photographing of modern church books – several counties are complete

modern church bookA page out of the Junosuando congregation book for the years 1935-1945 (AIIa:4), one of the many new church book volumes which have recently been added in ArkivDigital.
Link.

At the end of January, we announced some exciting news in a blog post. The National Swedish Archives changed a decision which had previously prohibited ArkivDigital from photographing some church books after 1935, (see previous blog entry). This opened up a long awaited opportunity for us, namely to photograph the modern church books up to and including the law of privacy limits (currently the year 1945). During the late winter, spring and summer, we have been busy photographing parish congregation books, moving in/out registers, birth, marriage and books. As a result of this work, 20 of the 25 counties are now complete.

Completed counties: Blekinge, Gotland, Gävleborg, Halland, Jämtland, Jönköping, Kalmar, Kopparberg, Kristianstad, Kronoberg, Malmöhus, Norrbotten, Stockholm, Södermanland, Värmland, Västerbotten, Västernorrland, Västmanland and Örebro.

Counties with photographing in progress: Göteborg och Bohuslän, Skaraborg, Uppsala and Östergötland.

For the remaining county, Älvsborg, we will soon begin to photograph these books.

You can find more detail as to what volumes are available in ArkivDigital such as the modern church books and other types of volumes on our website, (link to website page).

We want to emphasize that that there are different privacy rules for different series which influence which volumes we can photograph. In an earlier blog, (see earlier blog) we outlined some of the privacy rules for various types of church books, (see third and fourth paragraphs).
