ArkivDigital – 2019 Highlights

We wish you all a Happy New Year! We wish to take a glance backwards at the year 2019 and highlight the year’s events.

nyår2

86 Million Images
During the past year, we added 5.5 million images of historical documents which corresponds to 11 million pages to ArkivDigital’s online library. ArkivDigital is the world’s largest online provider of Swedish historical records for the genealogy and local history researcher.

Family Tree
In the beginning of November, we ArkivDigital launched our own family tree. All who have a subscription with ArkivDigital can use the tree in order to save information when one searches in the indexes or browses in the church books. You can create a tree manually or import one with a GEDCOM file from another family tree program that you have used. We continue to work adding new functions to the tree. Since launching the tree in November, we had added a simple print function and the possibility to add up to ten individual trees.

House of Nobility’s (Riddarhuset) portrait collection
At the end of the year, we digitized about 13,000 images from the House of Nobility’s portrait collection and we have also added a name searchable index that makes it simple to find a photo of a member of one of the noble families.

Swedish Estates and Farms (Svenska Gods och Gardar)
The book collection, Svenska Gods och Gardar, published at the end of the 1930’s and during the 1940’s includes much information about Sweden’s farms and about the people who lived on these farms. ArkivDigital has begun to photograph these books and now 21 volumes are accessible in ArkivDigital.

ArkivDigital is one of the “101 Best Websites for Genealogy in 2019”
During 2019, Family Tree Magazine again selected ArkivDigital as one of the “101 Best Websites for Genealogy”. Family Tree Magazine is North America’s leading genealogy magazine, helping readers discover and preserve their family history.

Emigrant Search
In September, we added an index with approximately 1.4 million emigrants leaving from the ports of Göteborg (Gothenburg), Malmö, Helsingborg and Stockholm. Now, it is much easier to search for emigrants going to the USA!

Table of contents for general muster rolls
In August, we simplified the method for those who search for soldiers. We published a table of contents search index for the general muster rolls. By using the table of content search index, one can quickly find the correct year, regiment and company.

Rotemansarkivet register
In August, we published the Rotemansarkivet register with 6.3 million index entries for persons who lived in Stockholm city during the years 1878 – 1926. This makes it simpler to find family who lived in Stockholm. The information from the Rotemansarkivet is available in the index, Population in Sweden 1860 – 1947.

Table of content censuses (Mantalslängder)
When the household records and other church books are missing, the tax records become an important source for genealogists. Therefore, we are pleased that we were able to publish a table of content censuses for the tax records. The table of contents makes it much simpler to locate and search in the tax records.

Name Index for Boatman Rolls (Båtsmansrullor)
In June, we published the index, boatswain active list, which makes it easier for one to find a boatman.

Name index for employees of the Papyrus paper mill
Our name searchable index, Employees at Papyrus, allows you to quickly find interesting information about employees at the paper mill, AB Papyrus.

Place aerial photographs on the map
We have added the aerial photographs to the map. Our goal is to make genealogy easy and that includes working with the aerial photographs.

Photographing of estate inventories (bouppteckningar)
We are continuing to photograph estate inventories and have added all estate inventories from the earliest times up to 1940. During the year, we have continued our work and our goal is to photograph estate inventories up to 1960. We now have estate inventories for some counties up to 1960 and in other counties photographing is in progress. We continue to work with the inventory of estate searchable name index to make it simpler to search for the correct estate inventory.

Genealogy Days in Borås
ArkivDigital was the main sponsor for Genealogy Days in Borås at the end of August. These days were as normal successful where we were able to meet many of our wonderful customers. We will see you again at Genealogy Days in Skövde in 2020.

RootsTech
In February, we participated in RootsTech in Salt Lake City in the United States. RootsTech is the largest genealogy conference in North America and we will again participate in 2020.

Additions to the military service cards index
In April, we updated our military service cards index and now one can search for military service cards for those who served in the Swedish military during the years 1902 – 1950. There are now approximately 2.4 million register entries in this index.

Educational videos on YouTube
Did you know that ArkivDigital has a YouTube channel? There are many educational videos on how to use ArkivDigital and during the past year, new videos have been added mainly about our new family tree. Look at our YouTube channel here. Note – videos are only in Swedish.

Population of Stockholm 1945
At the end of March, we published the Population of Stockholm 1945 index. The index includes about 670,000 persons and is a big help for all who research in Stockholm in the middle of the 1940’s.

Additions to the Birth, marriage and death indexes for parts of Sweden
Several times throughout the year, we have updated our birth, marriage and death indexes for parts of Sweden. There are now 3.8 million searchable name entries in the three index collections. Several registers we have created in thanks to partnerships with genealogical societies. We would like to have more partnerships so do not hesitate if you hear about or have a register that you wish to share.

Quickly find a volume
At the beginning of the year, we released another tool, filter function, to help you find a churcAh book or other documents in ArkivDigital. You can now filter and quickly display, for example, all birth books or all church books that contain a certain year. You will find the filter function above the volume list.

Locate parish on a map
Now with the help of a map, you can easily find a parish and then open up the church book archive directly from the map. You can even do the opposite, when you search for a parish from Archive info and want to know where the parish is located (or the nearby parishes). You find the Archive info tab above the volume list. Click on “Show on map” and the map opens and you will come directly to the right location.

Table of content SCB extracts
In January we published a table of content SCB index to make it easier to find the correct SCB extract. The SCB (Statistics Sweden) are birth, marriage and death record extracts for the years 1925 – 1947 (1930 – 1947 for parishes in Stockholm city). The table of content SCB makes it easy to find the correct extract for a parish and year.

A big thank you to all our wonderful customers for a fantastic 2019, and now we go forward to an exciting 2020!

Happy New Year!

fireworks-3653379_1920A little glance backwards at the year 2018
Here are some of the years´s highlights!

Interactive map for aerial photographs
Recently, we launched an interactive map that makes it much simpler to search for aerial photographs. This is a first step to adding mapping functionality as another powerful tool in our service.

Swedish-American church books
In addition to Swedish documents, we have also photographed church books in the United States. In 2018, most of the additions were for the state of Iowa but also for Nebraska, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

80 million images in ArkivDigital
We are now the largest provider of Swedish historical documents on the net. We are even larger than the Swedish National Archives who only have 65 million images on their online site.

Population of Sweden 1860-1947
Seventeen new years, 17 million posts (1930-1947) have been added during 2018, and the index now contains the years 1860-1947.
The Population of Sweden is by far the biggest searchable index in Sweden, it contains about 105 million name entries from 37,597 books.

Sweden’s estate inventory register
During the year, ArkivDigital’s searchable estate inventory register grew and we continue to add entries to the register. We will not quit until every estate inventory is searchable by name.

High resolution images of your ancestor’s family farm
Many have discovered our service where one can purchase high resolution photographs of family farms or other buildings. When one purchases a photograph, ArkivDigital will also publish all the other photos in the series and these will be published online and available to all subscribers. This is very similar to our process of ordering court book records.

Our software is now web based
During the year we have further developed and improved our software, mainly “under the hood” in order to increase our speed in developing new features and functionality that will be noticed in the coming years.

ArkivDigital was the head sponsor for Genealogy Days in Växjö in August 2018
Again, we will be the head sponsor for Genealogy Days in Borås in 2019.  Släktforskardagarna i Borås 2019

North America’s largest genealogy conference, RootsTech
We participated in RootsTech this year and will again participate in February 2019.

75,000 Customer corrections have been completed
Thank you! You have corrected 75,000 index entries this year. Continue to send corrections of errors that you discover. We are probably one of the few companies that wants to receive as many “bug reports” as possible.

Population of Sweden 1975
A few years ago, ArkivDigital launched two large searchable name registers which cover the entire Swedish population for the years 1950 and 1960. This year we have gone forward in time and launched a register for Sweden’s population for 1975.

Population of Sweden 1985
Now you can find relatives in the 1980’s. Shortly after we launched the Population of Sweden 1975, we went forward in time and launched a register for Sweden’s population in 1985.

Population of Sweden 1940
The Population of Sweden 1940 is now searchable in ArkivDigital! With a couple of clicks and searches, one can find information about approximately 6.3 million Swedes who lived in Sweden on the 31st of December 1940.

Birth, narriage and death indexes
Thanks to our partnerships with several genealogical societies and private individuals, we now have indexed by name about three million birth, marriage and death records. We welcome more partnerships, so please don’t hesitate to contact us.

The House of Nobility (Riddarhuset)
In the autumn, we have formed a partnership with The House of Nobility (Riddarhuset) to photograph historical documents.
The House of Nobility is an important Swedish historical source. It is a palace and an organization for Swedish nobility. The organization’s purpose is to preserve and maintain historical heritage by:

  • Preserving and publishing genealogies of noble families
  • Managing over 300 foundations
  • Maintaining and preserving the palace

The House of Nobility was founded more than 400 years ago and is organization that lists and documents the history of all Swedish noble families. It is a unique institution and not comparable to any modern organization. You can search for these historical documents of the Swedish nobility in ArkivDigital by going to Archive search and enter “Riddarhuset” in the search box.

150 million register posts
We now have 150 million register posts or 150 million entries searchable by name. 61 million new posts were added this year. No other organization has a larger number of searchable name indexes for Swedish historical records. The Swedish National Archive has just over 30 million published register posts.

A big thank you to all our wonderful customers for a fantastic 2018, and now we go forward to an exciting 2019!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Search for Aerial Photographs using an Interactive Map

We are now launching an interactive map feature in ArkivDigital that will simplify searching for aerial photos.

click on aerial photos

Click on “Aerial photos” on the menu to the left to open the map.

zoom colored points

You can move around the map by holding down the left mouse button and dragging the mouse. You can zoom in or out by clicking on the plus or minus signs or by scrolling with your mouse. By clicking on a colored point, you will zoom into that area.

image series information

Each map needle marker is an image series. These are not totally accurate in the location but click on the one closest to the area you are interested in. You need to be a little creative when searching. By hovering your mouse over the needle marker, you will see an information box giving information about the image series (serial number, film year and the number of images in the series). Both the front and back sides of the raw copies (paper copies) have been scanned. Thus, the number of photos of houses and farms is half as many as stated in the information box. The back side of the photo can contain some helpful and interesting information.

page images

When an image series is opened, the map and photo are displayed next to each other. You can scroll through the series just like in a regular volume using the 1 page or 5 pages forward and backward buttons. When the series is open, the map marker becomes blue and other series that are open at the same time will show a green marker.

explanations

You can reset the markers and the size of the map by using the “expand” and “reset map” buttons. More image series will be added to the interactive map funtion.

YouTube Video

You will find an instructional video on how to use the interactive map on YouTube. The video is in Swedish. Click here to see the video.

Order High-Resolution Images

You can purchase high-resolution digital copies of ArkivDigital’s aerial photos. The copy is made directly from the original negative and in such high quality that it can be used  in a variety of ways such as: publication in a book or on the web or framed as a wall hanging.

The price is 1495 Swedish kronor or approximately 165 USD.

You will receive a high-resolution digital image (length and width at least 5000 pixels, often more) in three different file formats: raw (completely unprocessed), tif (suitable for printing), and jpg (suitable for screen display) and all the information that ArkivDigital has about the image (such as the date it was taken and the type of aircraft used when filming).

When ArkivDigial creates the digital image, all other negatives in the same series are also digitized, usually 48, and these usually include other buildings in the same area. These images will then be published in ArkivDigital’s online archive and will be available to you and all customers. The quality of these images, created directly from the original negatives, is significantly better than the raw copies currently online.

If you would like to order photos, contact our customer service at: kundtjanst@arkivdigital.se.

ArkivDigital

Now, we begin to add aerial photographs!

At the beginning of the year we announced that ArkivDigital had acquired several million aerial photographs from Svenska-Aero Bilder. Click here to see the earlier blog. During the half year since then, boxes and boxes with maps, negatives and paper copies have been transported to our office in Lyrestad. Once in place, scanners, digital cameras and computers have been working at full speed. We are far from being complete, but we want to show you a little of what we have done.

In order to view the aerial photo collection, one must have an All-in-one subscription and access the service by using the web version of our program software.

First, we want to say it is not easy to find the right picture. You must understand the layout, abbreviation and codes. In addition, not all the photos have yet been scanned and thus are not yet available. So, with these reservations, we will try to explain the steps for finding the correct image.

boxes in lyrestad

In this example, we will search for an aerial photo from the small village, Dalstuda, which lies in Rättviks parish in Koppparberg county in Dalarna province.

First, we go to archive search and select the archive type, Flygbilder, and then we see what is available. Note – that we are continually adding new material.

select flygbilder

Search for “Flygkartor Kopparbergs län” and then select a volume. Each company has photographed their own maps. In this case, we will select SAB:1 (Svenska Aero Bilder).

share map series

The different navigational flight routes are on the overview maps. Locate the map that covers the region or area you are searching for.

search for correct map

Enlarge (zoom in) the image to see the code number.

enlarge the image

We have now discovered that this is image series E6952 which we shall now search for in the Svensk Aerobilders volume. Select Svenska Aero Bilder Råkopier E:XXXX (SAB). The beginning letter in the image series in this case is E.

search for correct archive

We are now coming close. In the long list, we will find the image series E:6952 and we open the volume by double clicking the volume.

share right volume

Now the image series is open and you can page through it in order to look at the images for that flight route. There can be a few images or as many up to a hundred photos. Unfortunately, today there is not a better description of which houses and farms have been photographed.

page forward

Remember to also look at the back of the card (image after photo), there may be some information about who ordered the image. There may be some information noting that one wants the photo trimmed.

notation photo sizing

ON BACKSIDE

In conjunction with the flight route notations on a map, logs were also created, named tagningsrapporter or filming reports.

tagging report

Today, we are asking for your assistance, even before we have built a proper support system for marking the individual houses and farms on a map.

There is no more detailed information than a number on an image series and an approximate route where the helicopter/airplane has flown when taking the photos for that series. The individual houses are not named. You who have lived or grown up in one place have the detailed knowledge about these houses or farms and if you want to help us identify them, we and other curious users will be very thankful.

When you find a house or farm and you know where it is located, do the following:

  1. Open your email application and send a mail to flygfoto@arkivdigital.se.
  2. In the mail, note the AID and the coordinates for the house or farm.
  3. Send the mail.

Find AID
AID is our identification to an image. This number can be obtained in different ways, e.g. by copying what is in the field or Copy Source Identifier which is circled in red in the image below. Once you have copied the number to your computer’s memory, paste it into your mail by going to the mail message and pressing Ctrl + v or right click with the mouse and in the menu which appears, select, Paste.

copy source

Find the coordinates
An easy way to find the coordinates is to use Google Maps: https://www.google.se.

  1. Enter the location if you know the address or nearest city in the search bar in the upper left corner. If there are multiple places with the same name, select the one that is correct.
  2. The map is now zooming in and you get a mark on the center of the site. If it’s a village or a city, usually the center is highlighted.
  3. Zoom in further by using the mouse wheel or +/- down in the right-hand corner of the map.
  4. You can move around by holding down the left side of the mouse and dragging the image.
  5. You can either view a map or a satellite image. Click on “Satellite” at the bottom left to switch to satellite view.
  6. Click on the house or farm in the Google satellite map that is the same as the image in ArkivDigital and an image will appear below with the coordinates for the place.
  7. Copy this information (right click and select copy) and paste this into the mail message that you send us.

google maps

You mail the following information to us:

AID number of the image –  e.g. v862785.b31
Address coordinates –  e.g. 56.841445, 13. 927757

We will save this information so that we can use it in the future. Thank you for your help.

We are aware that it is quite difficult to search for the right image, but this is a beginning and we hope that together we will enhance the product so that one can easily find the correct photo. We will be writing more blogs in the future about these aerial photos and the collection development.

ArkivDigital

ArkivDigital continues to grow!

Annual report

ArkivDigital recently published the annual company report which shows that 2016 was another great year.

Net sales increased by 18 percent to nearly 29 million Swedish kronor. Profits were nearly 5.9 million Swedish kronor, an improvement of nearly 3 million compared with the previous year. More than 8 million new images were added to the online database, this is a record high for the company, as well more than 50 million name register entries. The number of subscribers is nearly 26,000.

These strong financial numbers make it possible for the company to enter new ventures. In 2016, the company acquired several million aerial photos primarily of houses and farm from all over Sweden, most taken from the 1950’s to the beginning of the 2000’s.

Mikael Karlsson, Managing Director of ArkivDigital, writes in the annual report, “It is a wonderful feeling and means so much to make these fascinating photo collections available to many today and at the same preserve them for future generations. I am convinced our customers will share the same feelings. But the material will take some time to digitize so it will take some time before all the images are available in a high-quality format in our online service.”

The company is focused on further improving ArkivDigital, Mikael Karlsson presented a summary of the priorities:

  • Continue digitizing archival documents.
  • Digitizing other types of records, such as older photographs.
  • More name registers, example increase the Population of Sweden 1880-1920 to include 1860 to 1930.
  • Indexes that make searches in the documents easier.
  • Instructions and help texts within the software to facilitate the research, especially for beginners.
  • Smoother payment methods.
  • Increased interaction between ArkivDigital and researchers but also directly between researchers.

The annual shareholders’ meeting will be held on the 19th of May at the company’s headquarters in Lyrestad.
