Estate Inventories (Bouppteckningar) 1901-1960 – Status update

ArkivDigital has been photographing estate inventory records for the period, 1901 to 1960 for a while. We have mentioned this activity several times in our blogs, the last one was about a year ago: see previous blog. We have photographed much more since then and thought it was a good time to give a status update.

Our photographing progress varies between counties. Below is a status by county of what records are complete followed by a summary of the records we are currently photographing. Our goal is to photograph estate inventories up to and including the year 1960.  But in Gotland, we have been successful in photographing some later records. For all counties, single volumes may be missing in cases where they were in such poor physical condition that they could not be photographed.

Estate inventories are available in ArkivDigital up to the year noted:

1920: Jönköping, Kalmar, Östergötland
1930: Kopparberg, Kronoberg, Norrbotten, Södermanland, Uppsala, Västerbotten, Västernorrland, Västmanland, Örebro
1940: Gävleborg, Jämtland*, Stockholm
1945: Göteborg och Bohus, Skaraborg, Älvsborg
1950: Värmland
1960: Blekinge, Halland, Kristianstad, Malmöhus
1980: Gotland, (Visby city court 1945-1961 missing)

Photographing is in progress for the following:

1921-1930: Jönköping, Kalmar, Östergötland.
1931-1940: Kopparberg, Norrbotten, Södermanland, Uppsala, Västerbotten, Västernorrland, Västmanland, Örebro
1941-1945: Stockholm
1946-1950: Göteborg och Bohus, Skaraborg, Älvsborg
1951-1955: Värmland

*For Jämtland county, there are some estate inventories missing for the period 1861-1900. But currently photographing is in progress for these records. For the rest of Sweden, the estate inventories from earliest time to the year 1900 are available in ArkivDigital and have been for some time.

During the 1900’s, more estate inventories were typewritten. In the above image, which is from the Eksjö rådhusrätt och magistrats collection of estate inventories from the year 1926, we see the end or last page of a typewritten estate inventory and the beginning page of a handwritten one.

On Thursday, May 19th, ArkivDigital’s annual shareholders’ meeting was held at the company headquarters in Lyrestad, Sweden. The number of shareholders who attended the meeting represented nearly 70% of the outstanding shares.

All board members, Jan Aronson (Chairman of the Board), Paul Johansson and Häkan Skogsjö were reelected. Jonas Backlund was appointed as a substitute board member.

All the financial numbers for 2015 pointed in the right direction. Net sales increased by 16 percent to nearly 24 million Swedish kronor. Profits were nearly 2.9 million Swedish kronor, an improvement of 2.4 million compared with the previous year. The number of subscribers increased 5 percent to nearly 26,000.

Mikael Karlsson, managing director of ArkivDigital, highlighted the most recent developments at the board meeting. The All-in-one subscription, launched in early April, has already become very popular and the number of subscribers is nearly 7,000. The subscribers who have chosen to subscribe or upgrade to the All-in-one subscription have access to our two latest name searchable indexes: Population of Sweden 1880-1920 and Population of Sweden 1960. New registers of various types will be added to the All-in-one subscription in the future.

Along with index development, the company has continued to focus on photographing new records at a record pace. During 2015, nearly 7 million images were added to the database and at the end of the year more than 57 million images were in the online digital archive. Around the end of April and beginning May 2016, ArkivDigital reached another major milestone: 60 million images!

60 Million Images

arkivdigital

We are excited to announce that ArkivDigital has reached another milestone; 60 million newly photographed color images of old books and other documents are now available in our online digital archive. Since most images include two pages, this means that we now have nearly 120 million photographed pages available for historical research.

While we are extremely pleased and proud that we have reached another milestone, we are not slowing down. Each month we photograph approximately 600, 000 new images and we are focused on our next milestone, 70 million images. We are hoping to reach this goal in about eighteen months.

ArkivDigital’s image milestones:

  • 10 million images, August 2008
  • 20 million images, March 2010
  • 30 million images, September 2011
  • 40 million images, March 2013
  • 50 million images, September 2014

Estate Inventories (Bouppteckningar)
During the year, our major project to photograph all of Sweden’s estate inventories for the period 1901-1960, continued. We have added many estate inventories for various years in different counties.  You can read a status update of our estate inventory project in this blog entry.

Court Records
We have now completed projects for photographing the prison lists for all of Sweden from the Office of the Chancellor of Justice and also the Supreme Court protocols. The prison lists from the Office of Chancellor of Justice are available for the period 1750-1825 and the Supreme Court protocols are available for the period 1694-1800.

Documents concerning World War II
A number of records concerning Sweden during the Second World War had been added:

  • Spy and espionage documents from “Stockholms rådhusrätt 1850-1947, Avdelning 5, Avdelningen för spionmål”.
  • Air crashes from ”Flygstaben: Centralexpeditionen”.
  • Beredskapsverket” which consists of the Swedish military defense readiness official military history work. The main material is found in “Beredskapsverket, Avdelning 1”. In “Beredskapsverket, Avdelning 13”, are documents concerning the operations Save Denmark (Rädda Danmark) and Save Norway (Rädda Norge).
  • Documents from the C-byrån, which covered secret intelligence outside Sweden’s borders.

Older military records
Military pension documents from several archives have been added, which we have described in two blogs:

Before the general muster rolls began in the 1680’s, the collection “Rullor 1620-1723” was the primary source for military research. During 2015, we have added the volumes for the years 1620-1647 to ArkivDigital’s online archive.

Records outside of Sweden
The biggest project outside of Sweden during the year was the photographing of the Swedish American congregation church books in Kansas. Most of the volumes are now online but it won’t be until the beginning of next year before the project is complete. An overview of the Kansas collection is found in this blog entry.

During the spring, church books from several Swedish congregations outside of Sweden became available in ArkivDigital.

Concerning other records outside of Sweden, we want to also mention that we have begun to add documents from the seamen homes in Åland,Finland: Mariehamn seaman house and Vårdö seaman house. This project will be completed in the beginning of 2016.

New times ahead for ArkivDigital – Report from Annual Shareholder’s Meeting

ArkivDigital annual shareholders meeting“Headed toward new times” is the title of Archives Digital’s annual report for 2014.  And ArkivDigital’s Chief Executive Officer, Mikael Karlsson, focused on the new as he presented the forthcoming new product features at the Annual Shareholder’s meeting on May 19th in Lyrestad, Sweden.

A new software program replacing the current “ArkivDigital online” will be launched at Genealogy Days (Släktforskardagarna) in August.   The new program is built using modern technology with a user interface created in the same manner as a web page and displayed with a specially built web browser. A new function will be automatic software upgrades allowing improved versions to be released often without causing user inconveniences.

Another new feature that will be introduced is the capability to manage registers. At Genealogy Days, a searchable name register for Sweden’s entire population for 1950 will be released. Later, a name searchable register for 1960 will be released. The sources for these registers are the tax/population registers (mantal) for 1951 and 1961.  Within a year, there will be a searchable name register for all the household/congregation books for the years 1880-1920 (about).

According to Mikael Karlsson, “These new features will be powerful help tools for all researchers”.

The new program software is a rebuilding of the product. Many new functions are planned for the future such as: better help texts, powerful search possibilities and flexible payment methods, to take a few examples.

Concerning economic development during 2014, there were no unwelcome surprises. Net sales increased by 16 percent to nearly 20 million kronor. The number of subscribers increased 13 percent to nearly 25,000 and the image database grew so that it now includes more than 100 million pages of historical source material. The year’s results were 141,770 kroner (678,511 kroner 2013). The relatively modest profit is explained by the large investments the company is making, among others, personnel costs increased nearly 3 million kronor between 2013 and 2014.

The entire board was reelected which includes Jan Aronson (Chairman), Paul Johansson and Håkan Skogsjö. Folke Brished was appointed as a substitute board member.
