We have previously posted blogs about the Swedish congregations in Copenhagen and Paris: Svenska Gustafskrykan in Copenhagen and Svenska Sofiaförsamlingen in ParisWe also have records for Swedish congregations in other countries, namely Svenska Victoriaförsamlingen in Berlin, Germany, along with Svenska Margaretaförsamlingen in Oslo, Norway.

Both congregations were established in the beginning of the 1900’s. The birth books for the Oslo congregation begin in 1911 and the marriage and death books begin in 1912. In Berlin, the birth books begin in 1902 and the marriage and death books begin in 1903. For Berlin, there are also congregation books along with moving in and out registers which are missing for Oslo.

In addition to the common record types, we have photographed other types of documents for both the Berlin and Oslo congregations. An example of one is the Svenska Victoriaförsamlingen in Berlin OI: 3 volume which contains documents about church taxes from 1926 to 1941. Among the documents included are letters from church members who believe they do not have to pay a tax. The image above shows a letter from a woman who married a German man and thereby became a German citizen. Since she was required to pay a German church tax, she wrote that she no longer wanted to pay taxes to Victoriaförsamlingen.

For several years a large number of records for Åland, Finland have been available in ArkivDigital’s online library. A good overview of the records available is summarized in the blog post, “Ancestors from Åland, Finland? You can find them in ArkivDigital”.

However, the seamen house records for Åland were missing. Now, we have recently added the seamen house records for the Mariehamn seaman house and the Vårdö seaman house. You can find information about the Ålandic seamen and ships in the various records such as the signing on ledgers (påmönstrings-), signing off ledgers,  (avmönstrings-) and seaman rolls (sjömansrullor). Most of the photographed material originates from the end of the 1800’s along with records for the first half of the 1900’s.

The above image is a crew list for the sailing ship, Nils, whose home port is Vårdö, Finland for the year 1926.

You can find the seamen records in ArkivDigital by doing the following:

  • Go to the search window in ArkivDigital.
  • Select advanced options.
  • Select the archive type: sjömanshus.
  • There you will find a list of all the seamen house records that are in ArkivDigital.

Newspaper Clippings from Falkenberg 1899-1965 in ArkivDigital

ArkivDigital’s archive includes many types of historical documents. One interesting collection is a set of newspaper clippings from the Falkenberg Cultural and Local Historical Society (Falkenbergs hembygdsförening). These clippings were collected by a postal worker, Charles Moberg in Falkenberg. This collection includes many news items about events and individuals in Falkenberg.

Four of the volumes are titled, death records. In these volumes, you will find death notices and in many cases a photograph and an obituary of the deceased. Each of the death record volumes includes an indexed name register in the beginning of the book.

The other volumes include clippings about big and small events such as birthdays and events in Falkenberg and the surrounding area. These books also begin with an indexed name register.Falkenbergs hembygdsförening Urklipp14 (1911-1945) Bild 210 - sid 13 (1)
