Soon even more searchable name indexes in ArkivDigital!

slaktdata

ArkivDigital has entered into a partnership with the genealogy society, Föreningen Släktdata.

The partnership will allow ArkivDigital to have access to approximately 1.6 million index entries which will be searchable in ArkivDigital. These index entries include births, marriages, and deaths primarily from the western parts of Sweden. The register from Föreningen Släktdata has been created by genealogists from various parts of Sweden and is available on the Föreningen Släktdata website.

The new index entries will make it easier for ArkivDigital’s customers to find even more ancestors and relatives with the help of a simple search. You will be able to search by name, year, place and other criteria. Once you find the person you are looking for, you can easily click a link to access the original record to verify the information. Work on linking the index entries with the church books will begin next year and these new indexes will be available to ArkivDigital customers sometime in the coming year.

ArkivDigital’s goal is to publish more name indexes, both those that the company has created on its own and those that genealogy associations around Sweden have created over the years.

About Föreningen Släktdata
Föreningen Släktdata has existed since 1989 and is a society whose primary goal is to make as many church books as possible freely accessible for genealogists. The society’s searchable database which is free for all can be found at the following web address: www.slaktdata.org.

Estate Inventory Register available for Skaraborg county

The estate inventories (bouppteckningar) are one of the most important records for genealogists. These records can prove genealogical relationships as well as listing the names of the deceased’s heirs. Also, the estate inventory lists all the assets and debts of the deceased enabling one to get a better understanding of one’s ancestor’s life.

It can take some time to find the correct estate inventory since they are not organized in an exact order. To make it easier to find the correct one, ArkivDigital is working on creating name searchable indexes for the estate inventories.

We have now updated the inventory of estate index with about 200,000 entries for Skaraborg county. If you have ancestors who died in Skaraborg, it is now much easier to find their estate inventory.

Search passenger ship manifests by name!

We have some exciting news! You can now search by name approximately 1.4 million passenger ship manifests of persons emigrating from Sweden.

The ship manifests for emigrants created by the local police authorities in Göteborg, Malmö, Stockholm and Helsingborg have been available in ArkivDigital for a few years. Now, these manifests have been indexed by name so it is much quicker to search for the emigrant you are seeking.

You can search for the following information:

  • First name
  • Last name
  • Birth date or calculated birth year
  • Departure date
  • Departure port
  • Vessel or name of the ship

Search Tips

One tip is that you may wish to be a little creative in your search. Many names have been abbreviated so you should search with the full name and also use various abbreviations.

For many persons, only the age is shown on the manifest. We have calculated a birth year based on the mentioned age at departure. For persons who emigrated in the 1900’s, sometimes a complete birth date is noted in the manifest. If you search by the exact birth date and you do not get a match, you can search by birth year and also by the year before and year after the birth year.

Once you have found the right person in the search results, you can click on the link to see the original manifest. The original record will often include additional information such as the person’s home parish in Sweden along with the destination where the emigrant planned to travel.

emigrant register

The following information is included in the register:

  • Stockholm police (överståthållarämbetet för polisärenden): Approximately 38,000 posts from 1869 – 1940.
  • Gothenburg (Göteborg) police: Approximately 1.24 million posts from 1869 – 1951.
  • Malmö police: Approximately 169,000 posts from 1874 – 1939.
  • Police in Helsingborg: Approximately 11,000 posts from 1907 – 1908, 1929 -1949 along with 1956 – 1964.

Once you find the right person, you can search other archives within ArkivDigital. If the person was still alive in 1940 and living in the United States, you can find more information in the register, Swedes in US 1940. ArkivDigital also has many Swedish-American church books primarily in Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota and Nebraska and a few other states. You can find the Swedish-American church books by going to Archive Search and selecting United States as the country. You can also limit the search by state.
