Reading Swedish church books – examples and videos

Many of you already know that the Swedish church books are a great treasure. They are so complete and provide so much information about one’s Swedish ancestry. But many persons beginning their Swedish research find some of the handwriting intimidating as well have questions about the content in the various church books.

We have written about this in the past but today we would like to remind you that we have some tutorials along with some church book examples on our website. Also, again we want to point out a wonderful website (swedishgenealogyguide.com) that includes some instructional videos on reading Gothic handwriting and reading birth records from the late 1800s back to the early 1700s using ArkivDigital images.

The website (swedishgenealogyguide.com) which is free includes some wonderful instructional videos such as “Reading Gothic Handwriting for Swedish Genealogy” and several videos showing examples of reading birth records.

NEW! Births, marriages and deaths in Värmland

In September, we wrote a blog announcing that we had acquired a church book register that was created by the Värmland Genealogy Society. We have now completed the task of linking the register with the church books and we are now publicizing the Värmland index in ArkivDigital.

Now it becomes much easier to find persons who were born, married or died in Värmland. Instead of browsing through the books page by page, you only need to do a quick search. When you find the right person, you can simply click to see the original source in order to verify the information.

This update includes a total of 1,280,966 index posts from Värmland, divided as follows:

  • Births: 604,559 posts
  • Marriages: 230,591 posts
  • Deaths: 445,816 posts

The information about the births, marriages and deaths in Värmland have been added to our existing indexes: Births, parts of Sweden, Marriages, parts of Sweden and Death, parts of Sweden. As earlier mentioned, the index information was provided by the Värmland Genealogy Society.

The index for births in Värmland for the years 1800-1840 was added earlier to ArkivDigital; this index was created in-house.

The index for births, marriages and deaths in Värmland is not 100% complete and which years that have been indexed vary between the various parishes. For some parishes, you will not find indexes for all three record types and for a few they are completely missing. In the following three links, you can see exactly what is included in the update (scroll down until you find Värmland in the list).

After this update our birth index now has 4.1 million posts, our marriage index includes nearly 677,000 posts and our death index includes approximately 1.7 million posts. We will be updating the indexes with more counties so watch our blogs for information about future updates.

In order to open the indexes for the births, marriages or deaths, you log in at app.arkivdigital.se, select Index search and select Births, parts of Sweden, Marriages, parts of Sweden or Deaths, parts of Sweden in the list under Index source.

Name Register Review

ArkivDigital’s goal is to make Swedish research quicker and easier. We have added the Population of Sweden 1860-1947, a name searchable index of all the household/congregation books for all of Sweden with a direct link to the original record. We have added searchable name indexes for births, marriages, and death records for parts of Sweden primarily for the county of Kronoberg, many parishes in Södermanland county and a few other parishes with a direct link to the original record. Our goal is to index all the birth, marriage and death records for all of Sweden with links to the original records and this is in progress but will take some time.

Meanwhile, we would like to point out we do have printed name registers for various church books such as marriage name indexes for parishes in Gotland, name registers in some of the large city parishes and other name registers. We have written blogs about these name registers in the past and today we would like to present a summary of these blogs.

We continually receive questions from our English-speaking customers on where to find examples for reading the church book records. Today, we would like to point out church record examples on our English website and a few of the blogs that also give examples. On our English website, you will find a section titled, Swedish Genealogy. In this section, you will find record examples including both transcriptions and translations for birth, marriage, death, household and moving records. Below are links to these tutorials.

Below are references to blogs giving more reading examples of birth, marriage, death, and household records.
