Research Days in Washington

stephanie-and-annalenaThis past weekend Kathy Meade of ArkivDigital and Charlotte Börjesson, Olof Cronberg and Anna-Lena Hultman of SwedGen led two Swedish genealogy workshops in the state of Washington.

On Saturday a workshop was held at the Scandinavian Cultural Center at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington, and on Sunday a workshop was held at the Swedish Club in Seattle.

We were happy to meet all the Swedish-Americans who were excited to learn more about tracing their Swedish heritage. Many of the participants were thrilled to learn more about their personal history in the one-on-one sessions and view their ancestor’s records in ArkivDigital.

Over the years, we have heard many Swedish Americans say that they have royal ancestry but rarely can this be proved. But this weekend, one participant, Stephanie Anderson, was surprised and thrilled to discover that she is the descendant of a King of Sweden, Eric XIV. At the top of the page she is pictured with Anna-Lena Hultman of SwedGen who presented her with this exciting news.

Hands-On ArkivDigital Workshop in “Little Sweden U.S.A.”

leslyeArkivDigital and the McPherson County Old Mill Museum in Lindsborg, Kansas have a partnership whereby the museum sponsors spring and fall ArkivDigital workshops. The workshop offers participants two days filled with presentations and hands-on training using ArkivDigital. The 2016 fall workshop will be held the weekend October 1-2.

The workshops are a great opportunity to learn how to research your Swedish roots using ArkivDigital.  Shari from Kansas who attended the spring 2016 workshop summed up the weekend experience by saying, “This was a very useful weekend for me. I had access to people I could ask questions for two days straight. It was nice to be able to work on my research and have someone to talk a problem over with.”

Lindsborg, Kansas is known as “Little Sweden U.S.A.” because it was settled by Swedish emigrants in 1869 from Värmland. The town is well known for the Svensk Hyllningsfest, and other celebrations promoting its Swedish heritage. The Svensk Hyllningsfest has been held in October of odd-numbered years since 1941.

One of the local attractions is the McPherson County Old Mill Museum with exhibits in 12 buildings showing the lives of early Kansas settlers. One of the buildings is the Swedish Pavilion from the 1904 World’s Fair. The museum receives many visitors exploring their Swedish ancestry and requests for Swedish research.

Attend one of these workshops and discover your Swedish roots as well as meet other participants from across Swedish-America and together celebrate your Swedish heritage. Explore and enjoy the Swedish community of Lindsborg and its small town charm.

ArkivDigital at RootsTech 2016

Rootstech2

RootsTech is the largest family history event in the world and RootsTech 2016 (February 4-6) held in Salt Lake City, Utah was bigger than ever. There were over 25,000 registered attendees from all 50 U.S. states and 40 countries, 260 exhibitors and over 250 interesting and informative lectures.

Kathy Meade, ArkivDigital’s North American representative, gave a demonstration of ArkivDigital to a packed room on Thursday, February 4th. Many of the attendees expressed their excitement about the future searchable name register for the 1880-1920 household records which will make the search process so much easier.

RootsTech1

ArkivDigital had a booth in the exhibit hall with three workstations and there was a steady stream of visitors every day asking questions about ArkivDigital and how to use the service, how to find the place where their Swedish ancestor came from in Sweden, look-ups in the 1950 Swedish census, requests for reading assistance in reading records and many other Swedish genealogy and research questions. We wish to thank all the customers who stopped by the booth to say ArkivDigital is the best for Swedish research. But we were especially moved when one woman stopped by our booth and put her arms around the monitor and said, ”Oh, I love ArkivDigital. You gave me my family!”
