Find the correct tax register with our new index!

When the household records and other church books are missing, the tax registers (mantalslängder) become an important source for researchers. To easily find the correct tax register for a particular parish for a certain year has often been up until now a challenge. Since there were three copies of the tax registers, there have been three places to search for these records:

  • Mantalslängder 1642-1820 found in the chamber archive (English version)
  • In the respective county archive along with the respective district court (for parishes in rural areas) or the city courts.
  • kronokamrers, crown treasurer (kronokassörs), census office (mantalskontors), taxation authority (uppbördsverks) or kommunalborgmästares archive (for parishes in the city)

Once the desired volume was found, it was necessary to locate the records for the desired parish, not always the easiest task especially when there is no parish register.

The new index, Table of content censuses, searching for the tax register makes this much easier.

  • Select Index search.
  • Under index source, select Table of content censuses.
  • Enter the desired parish name and year and click search.
  • Click open image for the desired entry in the result list and the first page of the tax register appears.

On February 20, 1904, a fire at the vicarage in Kville destroyed large parts of the church archive. In order to facilitate the research, ArkivDigital has photographed the tax registers for Kville together with the annex parishes even after 1820 (which is usually the end year that we photograph tax registers). In the image above, you see the results list when one searches for the parish Kville for the selected years 1845-1859.

The Table of content censuses consists of nearly 440,000 index entries collected from approximately 9,200 volumes. In order to access the Table of content censuses, one must have an All-in-one subscription.

Additional Table of Content Censuses Search Tips

  • The county information refers to the county that the parish belonged to in the mid 1900’s, Historically, the parish may have belonged to a different county than what is today.
  • The tax registers were usually taken by parish and by city respectively. This also applies in cities with several parishes. Thus, if you are interested in tax register from Jönköping, search for “Jönköpings stad” versus Jönköpings Sofia or Jönköpings Kristina. Stockholm city is however an exception from the rule. Some tax registers were taken for the whole city and while others by parish. There search for both the city of Stockholm and the name of the parish in question. For Göteborg the tax registers ae organized by parish from 1833 forward but for previous years search for the city of Göteborg.
  • Sometimes there were separate tax registers for market towns (köpingar), municipalities along with mills, mines and similar institutions. If there is a separate tax register for a mill for example, distinct from the regular parish tax register, we have created a separate index entry which includes both the parish and the mill’s name (brukets namn) for example “Njutånger: Iggesunds bruk”. If the mill is included as part of the parish’s tax register, there is usually no separate index for the mill.

Name Index for Boatman Rolls (Båtsmansrullor)

During the late 1800’s, the boatman rolls (båtsmansrullorna) were created for the Navy seamen (båtsmän). These records are a gold mine for those interested in researching Navy seamen. Each seaman was given his own little book where one can follow his career from admission to discharge. We can discover a description of his physical appearance, where and how he served and even if he was punished for any infractions. In a previous blog, Boatman rolls (Båtsmansrullor) a unique source, which was published a few years ago, you can get more information about these records and also see a detailed example showing the Naval career for Gustaf Johansson Blå.

In order to make it easier to find the correct boatman roll, we have now published a new name searchable index, Boatswain active list. The register covers the entire country and includes about 4,600 index entries.

Name index of Papyrus Paper Mill Employees

Papyrus AB was a paper mill, located in Mölndahl, Sweden. The mill produced wood pulp, fine paper and cardboard and was considered the most technically advanced paper mill in Sweden. The company was founded in 1895 and ceased through a reorganization in 1991.

For about a year, ArkivDigital’s online library has included around ninety volumes of Papyrus employee information. More than 30,000 images are in this collection. To make it easier to navigate in the most interesting sections of the collection, we have created a new name searchable index, Employees at Papyrus.

The index, created by Leif Carlsson, includes over 9,200 index entries. For some employees, there is only one register index record; for other employees, there are multiple entries. The register covers forty years, from the beginning of the 1910’s to the beginning of the 1950’s.
