View list of Swedish parishes in web version!

One comment that we have heard several times at recent conferences is “I can’t see a list of all the parishes in Sweden in ArkivDigital’s web version”. In order to see the list of  parishes in the web version, one must do the following:

parish searchListing of 2,859 parishes within Sweden

You will see a listing of 2,859 parishes. The parishes are listed in alphabetical order. Remember that there are three additional letters in the Swedish alphabet: Å, Ä, Ö. These letters are at the end of the alphabet.

You can further limit your search by county or province. Make sure the country selected is Sweden. Sweden is the default country. Under Swedish county, you can select a desired county and then only the parishes for that county will be selected. In the example below, the county of Kalmar was selected. Now only the 127 parishes for Kalmar are shown.

Name Register Review

ArkivDigital’s goal is to make Swedish research quicker and easier. We have added the Population of Sweden 1860-1947, a name searchable index of all the household/congregation books for all of Sweden with a direct link to the original record. We have added searchable name indexes for births, marriages, and death records for parts of Sweden primarily for the county of Kronoberg, many parishes in Södermanland county and a few other parishes with a direct link to the original record. Our goal is to index all the birth, marriage and death records for all of Sweden with links to the original records and this is in progress but will take some time.

Meanwhile, we would like to point out we do have printed name registers for various church books such as marriage name indexes for parishes in Gotland, name registers in some of the large city parishes and other name registers. We have written blogs about these name registers in the past and today we would like to present a summary of these blogs.

Baptismal date is a feast day!

In many of the early birth, marriage and death records, you will often see the feast day of the event versus the calendar date. Today, we will look at a birth record that gives the feast day versus the calendar date for the baptism. Below is an image for a child named, Boel, born on the 18th of January 1815 in Östra Kareby (older spelling Östra Carleby) parish in Malmöhus county.

feast dayÖstra Karaby (M) CI:1 (1813-1827) Image 6 / Page 3 (AID: v106896.b6.s3, NAD: SE/LLA/13520)

Her parents were Åke Nilsson and Boel Jönsdotter from Östra Carleby (Kareby). The child was baptized on the feast day, Septuagesima or the 9th Sunday before Easter. There were fixed feast days that always fell on a certain date such as Christmas on December 25 and others were movable feast days because the calendar dates differed each year such as Easter.

You can find a Swedish feast day calendar by clicking here. (Article is in English.) In 1815, the feast day of Septuagesima was on January 22 and thus Boel was baptized on January 22, 1815.

Estate Inventory (Bouppteckning) Review

Usually the first set of Swedish records one looks at when one begins one’s Swedish genealogical research are the Swedish church books. These books are wonderful and contain so much information. For many, the next set of records are the estate inventories because these records provide genealogical information as well as offer a deeper understanding of one’s ancestor’s life.

Today, we have estate inventories for all of Sweden from the earliest times (approximately early 1700’s) up to 1940 in ArkivDigital. We are currently adding records up to 1960. For a complete status as of February 2019, click here.

We are also beginning to index by name the estate inventories and the name of the index source is inventory of estate. Click here to get an update of what estate inventories have been indexed. Click here to get more information about estate inventory indexes.
